Grading

Level 1 (From beginner to early improver)

  • Rally: Players have 3 attempts to have 2 cross court baseline rallies of 20 (forehands & backhands) in 90 seconds with a partner. The outside shot must only be used, and the majority of balls should be over the service line
  • Serve: Players must hit 7/10 serves accurately from the baseline to the returners forehand or backhand. The server nominates where they will serve before each serve
  • Net play: Players have 3 attempts to get 20 out of 25 shots in. The player plays 5 sets of; a deep approach shot, 2 deep volleys, a smash & a finishing volley
  • Score & Compete: Players play best of 3 tiebreaks or a 20 minute timed tennis match.

 

Level 2 (From early improver to intermediate)

  1. In the groundstrokes test, players will rally cross court with a feeder without the tramlines for 1 minute / The player has 3 attempts at the 1 minute test on the forehand diagonal / The player will then repeat the test on the backhand diagonal / The highest score from each diagonal will be added together to give the overall groundstrokes score / To pass a Grade 1, the player needs a total groundstrokes score of 20 points (1 point = 1 ball cross-court behind the service line)
  2. In the volley test, players will volley against a baseline feeder in a half court not including the tramlines / The player starts on, and recovers after each shot, to a marker that is halfway between the net and the service line / The feeder rallies from the baseline aiming to give the player volleys below shoulder height / The player has 1 minute to gain their score / The player has 3 attemps at the 1 minute test and the highest score counts / To pass a grade 1, the player needs a volley score of 10 points (1 point = volley into the half court and keep the feeder behind the baseline)
  3. In the serve test, the player will hit 8 serves from the deuce side and 8 from the ad court / To pass a Grade 1 the player needs to hit 8 out of 16 serves in the court with the 2nd bounce beyond the baseline)

 

Level 3 (From intermediate to advance)

  • In the groundstrokes test, players will rally cross court with a feeder without the tramlines for 1 minute / The player has 3 attempts at the 1 minute test on the forehand diagonal / The player will then repeat the test on the backhand diagonal / The highest score from each diagonal will be added together to give the overall groundstrokes score / To pass a Grade 2, the player needs a total groundstrokes score of 15 points (1 point = 1 ball cross-court rising when crossing the baseline) with a minimum of 6 points on each diagonal
  • In the volley test, players will volley against a baseline feeder in a half court not including the tramlines / The player starts on, and recovers after each shot, to a marker that is halfway between the net and the service line / The feeder rallies from the baseline aiming to give the player volleys below shoulder height / The player has 1 minute to gain their score / The player has 3 attemps at the 1 minute test and the highest score counts / To pass a grade 2, the player needs a volley score of 12 points (1 point = volley into the half court and keep the feeder behind the baseline)
  • In the serve test, the player will hit 8 serves from the deuce side and 8 from the ad court, 8 slice serves from the deuce court and 8 topspin serves from the ad court / To pass a Grade 2 the player needs a total serve score of 8 points (Flat serve: To score the serve must be in and cross the baseline to the backhand side of the half way marker between the T and the singles trimline, Slice serve: To score the slice serve must be in the court and show a slice flight path and cross the outside trimline before crossing the baseline, Topspin serve: To score the topspin serve must be in and show a topspin flight path and bounce - Stick on the baseline, halfway between the trimlines)

 

Level 4 (From advance to performance)

  • In the groundstrokes test, players will rally cross court with a feeder without the tramlines for 1 minute / The player has 3 attempts at the 1 minute test on the forehand diagonal / The player will then repeat the test on the backhand diagonal / The highest score from each diagonal will be added together to give the overall groundstrokes score / To pass a Grade 3, the player needs a total groundstrokes score of 20 points (1 point = 1 ball cross-court rising when crossing the baseline) with a minimum of 8 points on each diagonal
