Summer Camp
There are still plenty of spaces available on our summer camps this school holiday! All juniors, members and non-members aged between 5 and 16 are welcome, so please spread the word to any friends or family who may be interested. The day will be packed with various sports, games and competitions so if you are interested please see Ann Nichols or Warren Sawyer at the club or contact Ann at ann.nicholls46@btinternet.com for more information.
Club Tournament
We are now at the closing stages of the Club Tournament with semi-finals being played over the next few weeks in readiness for FINALS WEEKEND on 2nd/3rd September. With 16 events plus 4 plate events, 80 members taking part and 60 matches already played - it has been quite busy down the club. All draws have been updated and are on the board in the Club Pavilion. There have been some big 3 set matches, notably Corin Tulk and Luke Daine put out the no.4. seeds Ann & Ian Nicholls in 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the Mixed Doubles; James Stacey and Laura Peachment also had a good run in the mixed beating Craig Witheridge and Louise Atherton-Howlett in 3 sets but then went down to no. 2 seeds Graham Tate and Sophie Young 6-4, 3-6, 6-0; Ben King edged past Edward Mann in 3 tough sets in the boys singles and now faces No 1 seed Thomas Devaney in the semis; Colin Larby and Paul Chase edged past Chris Li and Phil Davey 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 to reach the semis of the Vets Mens Doubles; whilst Phil Davey went on to another battle with partner Ray Gallagher narrowly beating Tony Edelsten and Mike Lake 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Lots of mouth-watering finals in prospect for Finals Weekend (hopefully a bit more exciting than the Mens Wimbledon Final - no tears from our players at the thought of a blister!) - so put the date in your diary and come along down and enjoy a few of Liz's cakes and some great tennis.
Match Reports
Acle A Vets v Diss A Vets Men
On Sunday 16th July we welcomed the current League Champions Diss A. Ian Nicholls, Ian Blackburn, Ann Nicholls and Liz Lake were representing Acle. The two Ians got off to a rather surprisingly strong start winning their first set 6-0. However, Diss then settled down and won the second set 7-5. The ladies lost a hard fought match 6-1,6-4. The first three sets of the mixed went to Diss before Ian B and Liz secured the last set 6-3. The final result was a 6-2 win for Diss.
Stanmore B v Acle B Men
After another late cancellation from Boston's, Acle B were rearing to play. The team fielded was Tom Blackburn, Ian Blackburn, Graham Tate and James Lillistone. After a pre match warm-up, Graham opted to play on the top court and it payed off with Acle B storming to a 42-22 victory. Acle B remain in 2nd with 2 big fixtures to play against Acle B's rivals in division 2, Boston's A and Virgin A upcoming. Well done team.
Boston A v Acle B Men
On a misty rainy night at Lime Tree Road, Acle B was keen to play in fear that 3 out of 4 Boston's matches would be called off. The team was Tom Blackburn, Ian Blackburn, Damian Lake and Hugo Westveer. Despite poor conditions being a major hindrance, the B team powered to a 38-26 victory. Well done team with a guest appearance from A team star Damian.
Acle D v Wymondham Men
Wednesday 20th July. We made two changes to the team in order to try and get a result at Wymondham who are trying to win the league. The warm up starts and Luke informs me that one of the their team called 'Diggers' is a 2 point 1, as I am noting that they have 3 changes from the team who came to us. Phil Davey and Luke Daine are playing on the far court against the 2 point 1 so the speed of the serves could be seen very clearly while on the near court Matt Hammond and Craig Witheridge were trying to cope with a equal hard hitting pair who left very few gaps, put hardly anything out, and got backs shots that would normally win points. I can’t remember so many first serve winners in a city league match and the ruthless smashes to win the points was also at a very high level. It was in the end a very good one sided game where we acquired 5 games in the first two games and 8 in the other two. Result - 51/13.
