Club Open Day 2018!

It was another successful Open Day with lots of youngsters and prospective members down the club to enjoy a fun filled day. The children enjoyed the mini tennis and as ever the speed gun serve competition was very popular.

Teas, cakes and bacon butties plus the opportunity to buy racquets, tennis shoes and other kit from Top Spin Tennis also helped to make the day a success, along with the support of our members who came down to help out and showcase our fantastic club!

Thank you to all the members and organisers who made it such a great day!

Running of Monday Club Night

Match Report

Ladies A Team

The ladies A team had their first match of the season this week at home against Cromer A. Both pairs (Andi /Shelley and Sara /Corrin) had a great start, winning 11-5. Andi and Shelley went on to win their second match 12-4, with Sara and Corrin just losing out in a tight game to the stronger pair 7-9. Final result 41-23.

Mens B Team

With the hot sun beating down, the loud rhythm of drum and bass, scooters revving up and doing wheelies and the occasional wafts of strange substances, the new season was underway at Taverham. Acle B, having slumped all the way down to Division 3 returned to Division 1 after a seven-year absence. With the knowledge that the five other clubs had heavily strengthened their teams we expect a brutal season. Indeed, one of our A team players had apparently experienced “night terrors” before the season had even started!

Our fears were quickly crystallized with one of our pairs going down 16-0 in the first rubber. After the first matches the team were already down 22-10. In the second rubber Ian and Tom’s unbeaten run for the B team which stretched back to 17th July 2016 (and against 27 pairs) finally came to an end as they came to terms with the new reality. Overall, we lost 42-22. A valiant effort from the team of Ian & Tom Blackburn, Joe Ketteringham and Graham Tate.

B Team Winter League Round Up

Firstly congratulations to the A Team for securing a convincing victory of the Division 1 title under the captaincy of Andrew Devaney.

The B Team however were far from disgraced settling in well into life

in the higher Division 2 and indeed managing to finish in second

place, although this is still yet to be confirmed. The Team suffered

only two defeats all season both came from out of the hands of a

team which will surely be challenging for Division 1 honours next

year.

We saw a Winter Season in which Tom and Ian Blackburn battled

valiantly, scoring good victories along the way. Both encouraging and

supporting a sometimes injured Captain out of trouble.

The Ladies were a blessing, playing passionately for the team in so

many challenging and testing matches. For example the match

against Diss saw Shelley Long and Libby Sturrock take on and earn a

draw against a powerful Diss pairing which was described at the time

as the Battle of the Broadland Babes verses the Diss Dames.

Jane Jackson and Laura Peachment played some of the toughest

opposition in the League and always played with great determination

and finess.

Andi Mc Combe was an integral part of the team playing splendidly

on many occasions and in time becoming so at home within the team

she felt confident in telling the Captain of where he had gone wrong

and how he can put it right. Perhaps one of the few players who

could do so and still have a pLace in the squad next year.

A great season of Winter Tennis and a sincere thank you to all who

made themselves available to play on Sunday Mornings at some

times very short notice.
