Tie Break Tens

Tie Break Tens

On Sunday 14th October we held a ‘Tie Break Tens’ competition with the intention to raise the profile of singles’ competition, develop a fast-paced and more open/challenging format for a wide range of abilities and ages of player and to ensure that players can meet new people who might be their level of play for extended singles’ matches in the future.

Everything was under control except the weather and it was very nearly washed out completely.

The 20 players on board quickly became 12 as the bad weather set in but the hardy souls that turned up were eventually treated to some good quality play and tight matches. 28 matches were played across the 3 hours and the concept worked well as everyone had at least 4 new opponents to test themselves against. The 3 randomly-drawn groups were won by John Hinds, Joseph Finch and Kieron Hinds and then everyone had to get through a play off round based on their final league standings.

Even the players at the bottom of the league standings could still win at this stage which kept everyone interested!

The play off round established the final 8 quarter finalists and the standard was improving as the sun started to shine.

Tight semi finals between Kev Wood and Kieron Hinds and Paul Dunn and John Hinds (Paul eventually winning 11-9 after an excellent match) had all of the competitors glued to the action whilst enjoying a burger or a hot dog.

The eventual champion was Kieron Hinds who won through 10-5 against a valiant runner up in Paul Dunn.

Congratulations to everyone who took part and we hope to return with better weather and at least 20 players in May 2019.
