Jumper’s knee, or patellar tendonitis, is a common tennis injury. This is caused by overloading the joint with repeated movements such as bending or jumping. The tendon that attaches your knee to the top of your shin can become strained or torn, causing injury and pain.
Commonly, this injury can include tenderness, swelling and a dull ache, particularly during or after you play tennis, run or walk. It can also cause weakness in your quadriceps, at the front of your thigh.
You can help prevent this by:
-Warming up your muscles before you play
-Strengthen your quadricep muscles, as this will help stabilise your knee. Try adding squats, lunges, or straight leg raises to any exercise program that you currently do.
-Regular stretches of your quadriceps, hamstrings and calves.
Playing on hard surfaces with the wrong technique and wearing the wrong shoes can also exacerbate this further. If this is something you are experiencing, happy to have a chat about what can be done to make things easier!
