1. Juniors

Congratulations to Connor Birnie, one of our young stars in the U12s who had his 12th birthday last week, and got his name up first on the Junior Championship entry form.  Come on the rest of you...and thanks Connor!

All the info for the forthcoming mini and junior events (8's, 9's, 10's, U12 and U16) should already have been emailed out to you.  Mini Champs will be held on Sunday 21st August, so please add your names to the entry sheet on the noticeboard, or speak to your coach for details.

As we enter the last few days of Summer Camps, you have the opportunity to work on your shots, play some practice games, and have a lot of fun!

2. James Black Mixed Handicap Tournament & Barbecue - Saturday 27th August

For those of you who haven't played in this event before, I can assure you it's one of the best social days in our calendar.  Even the draw for partners creates hilarity and drama - to say nothing of the handicapping!  There is a limit of 32 entries (16 male/16 female) so please enter now via the ClubSpark invitation email, or on the clubhouse noticeboard to avoid missing out.  (And there is a reserve list too.)  Play is followed by a BBQ at the clubhouse.

3. Team Tennis

40 years old or over?  (And willing to admit to it!)  We have 4 ladies and 2 mens entered into the TWoS Seniors leagues which start in the next couple of weeks.  Matches are played on weekday evenings and some Sundays too, so it's a good chance to compete against your own age group.  Team captains are listed in the Teams page of our ClubSpark website.

4. Cup Final (no, not the women's footie) - Our Clydesdale Cup Team!

Our Clydesdale Cup (three mixed doubles pairs) reached this year's final, which was played at Bearsden last Wednesday against a strong Queens Park team.  All three courts saw close matches that thrilled the watching supporters.  At 4-4, and with great support from the veranda (and despite Liam's attempts to put himself in hospital(!)), he and Karen won their final set to seal a very tense and dramatic 5-4 win. Congratulations to Emma, Fraser, Andrew, Susan, Liam, Karen, and captain Joanne.

5. Clubhouse/courts

  • Security: Whether it's daytime or evening, please, please, if you are the only players at the Club, make sure the patio and front door is closed before you go home.
  • Nets: The Club has recently had to purchase a new net which unfortunately snapped while being adjusted. Please avoid leaning, swinging on, or jumping over the net.
  • Table Tennis: As most of you will have seen, we have a new (to us) table tennis table - kindly donated to the Club by one of our members.  Please enjoy it with the bats and balls also provided, but don’t try to move it on your own!
  • 200 Club: Don't know what this is?  Contact Jayne Gilkes to join this year.  You can win a monthly prize and support fundraising activities at your tennis club.
  • Lost Property: Despite many trips to local charity shops, we continue to see clothing/equipment being mislaid and accumulating in the clubhouse. Please check before you go home, or stick your name on clothing so we can return it to you...
  • Balls: Ex-match balls are still available (£2 for a tin of 4).  Contact Rob, any committee member, or team captain.  And don't forget that we recycle used (good quality) tennis balls with Recycaball - contact Andy or put them in the white container in the men's changing room.
  • Clothing:  You can purchase items from the Bearsden LTC clothing range for our junior and adult members.  With a choice of tops, mid-layers, hoodies and rain-jackets in black (for juniors) and blue (for adults) and with an option to include your initials, some members are already looking like professionals!  The online shop is via Kitlocker at https://www.kitlocker.com/racketsports/tennis-clubs/bearsden-ltc.

6. Future Events

Look out for news about our annual Awards Night to be held on Friday 14th October at Douglas Park Golf Club. This is a not-to-be-missed evening with a buffet meal, music, “Special Awards”, and much more.  Confirmation and more details very soon...

7. Your Club Needs People Like You

Your Club cannot function without its committee, and this requires members stepping-up to take the place of those who have "completed their shift".  It's not a permanent position!  Volunteers are precisely that - but you are vital to the Club, and the members of the committee help make it what it is and shape its future.  Can you give a few hours every 5/6 weeks?  Get in touch with me if you can.

Cheers,

Phil Waterfield, President, BLTC
