Visitors to the Bromsgrove Tennis Open day were greeted with bunting, a cake station, face painting, a BBQ, and a raffle, all contributing to the lively, carnival atmosphere that made the day a resounding success. The event, held on Saturday, September 13th, 2025, was a masterclass in community collaboration, blending the thrill of the club finals with a welcoming and family-friendly open day.
The club committee had the foresight to commission two of its own, Luke Bibby and Adam Darby, to organise the open day alongside the Club Finals. Together, they assembled a dedicated steering committee whose tireless efforts and meticulous planning were evident in every detail of the event.
One of the biggest hits of the day was undoubtedly the cake stand. This delicious success was thanks to the incredible organisation and dedication of Graham Walker, who had started his home baking preparations a full six weeks before the event. He also rallied a fantastic team of fellow bakers, including Carol Cornellisen, Di Horton, and Nicky Calthorpe. The legendary carrot cake baked by Bruce Turner disappeared in record time, a testament to its deliciousness! Chloe Adkins, Karen Southall, and several heroic relatives of club members also provided some fantastic bakes, ensuring there was something for everyone.
The face-painting station was a hub of creativity and laughter, all thanks to the heroic efforts of Karen Osborne, who single-handedly manned the station all day. She created countless fantastic designs, leaving a trail of happy and colourful customers in her wake.
The BBQ was a non-stop operation, fuelled by the combined efforts of the Open Day steering committee and a team of willing family members and club volunteers. Luke Bibby and his partner Marija, Phil Boardman, BCHTC president Trevor Errington, Karen Southall, Oliver Stratford, Di Horton, Dave Jones, and Tennis Chairman Steve Jones all put in hard shifts at the grill, serving up a constant supply of delicious food to the hungry crowds.
Beyond the food and fun, the day was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the club. Head Coach James Griffiths ran several popular tennis taster sessions, which were lapped up by many a star of the future. The courts were alive with new faces, and the positive energy was infectious.
The was also a fastest serve competition with many lining up to see just how high they could get the number in the measuring machine.
The day was not only an enjoyable occasion but also a significant triumph for the club. Over £2000 was raised, providing a vital boost to club funds. Furthermore, the event's welcoming nature paid dividends, with over 10 new people signing up to become members as a direct result of the day.
The Open Day steering committee, consisting of Phil Boardman, Tosin Ajayi, Trev Errington, Karen Osborne, Graham Walker, Adam Darby, and Luke Bibby, has already met to discuss how to replicate and even better this fantastic event in the future.
