Burton Tennis Coach Chosen For Special LTA Kids’ Programme
Burton tennis coach Duncan Coates has been selected by the LTA to deliver a unique free coaching programme to just 10 lucky children aged between 5 and 8 years from this area who have never played tennis before.
Designed to build on the terrific success of the Davis Cup team who brought the cup back to Britain after a 79 year wait, the Tennis for Kids programme will see 1,000 specially trained coaches lead 10,000 children up and down the country who will take part in six specially designed weekly tennis sessions. Participants will also receive a free racquet to keep on completion of the course. The initiative is an attempt to drive up participation in the sport to create a lasting legacy based on the success of those at the top.
Level 2 coach Duncan was initially chosen from an application that also involved a video interview. He will take part in training sessions delivered by prominent figures such as GB Davis Cup captain Leon Smith and former top player Annabel Croft
As the course is designed for children who have never played tennis, the exercises focus on core skills such as ability, balance and coordination. Beyond the practical side of the sport, the course will also focus on how to be a valuable team member and how to work with a partner – all in a fun and relaxed environment.
Duncan is naturally very excited about the initiative: This is a fantastic opportunity for the club and a great way to give children who have never tried tennis before a chance to learn and get active. With only 10 places available the course is expected to fill up very quickly so book your child in by going onto LTA.org.uk and following the Tennis for Kids link.” If, however, the course is full, the club does offer a wide range of tennis sessions for players of all ages and new members are always welcome. More information can be found on the club’s website www.burtontsc.org.uk or by calling the club on Burton 565043.
