On Sunday 19th March, Burton TSC hosted an internal singles tennis match play tournament. The weather was very kind as the sun was shinning, although the swirling wind did make conditions a little tricky.
8 tennis gladiators took part in a play back draw consisting of 3 matches. It was evident from the first round that each match was going to be competitive and each point fought for until the end. The rallies were surprising long due to the conditions and more often than not won on good shots not mistakes. The highlight of the first round was an epic battle between Jack Triptree and Jasmine Smith culminating with Jack winning 11-9 in the 3rd set tiebreak.
The second round matches continued to be of a high standard and the quality of tennis actually improved. The highlight of this round was a match between Omar Haroun and Evie Smith, again ending with an Omar win 10-8 in the final set tie break.
The final was an amazing contest between Michael McHale and Tanvir Greswal. The length of the rallies and quality of hitting for ones so young was very impressive. It was fascinating to see the tactics deployed by both players to enable a chance to win the point. The contest was eventually won by Tanvir 6-3, 6-2 although the match was a lot closer than the score depicts.
I want to thank all the competitors for a great tournament as it was a pleasure to umpire and watch.
