Week 5 Round-Up
Sun, 05 Jun 2022 00:00
The fifth week of the 2022 season ended up being a mixed for Carlton LTC.
It began with probably the most thrilling contest of the club's season so far as they managed to topple Birkdale's second team 9-7. With nothing to separate them aftet the mixed doubles, it looked as if it would end slatemate. But a set captured at the very end in a tiebreak by captain Kris Cooper and David Grice secured what could the first team's most valuable three points of the season.
Monday was a much smoother evening for the second team, as they produced a near-perfect performance in their 15-1 win over Mawdesley 4. Despite missing a number of regular players, the replacements rose to the occasion with a number of impressive displays to give the second team a convincing win and their third win of the season.
The same could not be quite said for the third team, who narrowly lost 9-7 to Birkdale 4 in what was a highly entertaining contest . Despite falling behind 6-2 after the mixed doubles, the confidence in the team showed in their performances and they knew the contest was not over. Wins in both of the men's doubles gave the team hope. However with only one set claimed in the women's doubles, the comeback was not complete and Birkdale ended up taking all the points.
Thursday saw the Liverpool Team struggling for a full side and were forced to field a few debutants. With a solid and talented Eccleston Park B side aiming for promotion, there was little opportunities for Carlton to claim anything from this match and a 6-0 defeat was the end result.
