The Club has just completed a 10 week block of junior tennis coaching taken by professional coach Mark Sindall of Advance Tennis. We had upwards of 40 youngsters attending 4 sessions on Thursday evenings. 3 squads were split mainly on age lines with mini red ball (under 8), mini orange ball (under 10) and mini green/yellow ball (over 10) groups. Mark then took a Stewartry under 10 Improvers group drawn from the 3 local clubs; the home club, Dalbeattie and Kirkcudbright. In addition Mark has been taking an over 10 Improvers group on Saturday afternoons based at Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie. 4 juniors from SCSC were included in this squad. The club also ran a very successful mini red ball tournament for the under 8's recently with plans to run mini orange and green ball tournaments after the school holidays.
Thursday night junior coaching goes into recess for the school holidays and will re-commence on Thursday 22nd August but in conjunction with Advance Tennis the club is running 4 tennis camps during this period. These will run on Wednesday 10th July and Wednesday 7th August. There are 2 sessions each day with 3 hours of fun games, activities and coaching provided in each one; 9.00 am to 12.00 pm is for ages 5 to 9 (mini red and orange ball) and 1.00 to 4.00 pm is for ages 10 and over (mini green and yellow ball). Players can sign up for one or both days and it is completely open to members and non-members as well as members of other clubs. The cost is £8 per session and with places going fast you are advised to contact Mark Sindall on 0787 526 9073 to book your place.
The Men's league team are in 2nd place with one match to go at home against current holders Dumfries A. Dumfries A have 16 points from 9 matches whilst SCSC have 14 points from the same number. The other 4 clubs have completed their 10 matches and Dumfries B and Dalbeattie finished on 11 points followed by Dumfries C and Annan Seaforth on 3 points. SCSC can't overtake Dumfries A even with a win due to an inferior rubbers won and lost ratio but have done well to secure 2nd place. A squad of 5 players including Colin Kennedy, Bruce Todd, Rab Peacock, Ian Cain and Richard Baines played all the matches.
The ladies league was recently completed with SCSC retaining their title. The team was presented with their league trophy and the photo shows 7 of the 8 members of the winning squad with Liz Baines unable to attend. SCSC has entered a team in the Dumfries and Galloway mixed doubles league which will start up later in July.
