Racketball Finals

Following on from last year’s successful Handicap Competition, and the increasing popularity of Racketball at the club, SCSC is pleased to have added the inaugural Open Racketball Championship to the club calendar.  We now have a further cup and title for our members to vie for.

The earlier keenly-fought rounds culminated in a finals night on Wednesday 28th June,  featuring Plate and Championship Finals. In both events, club stalwarts of a certain age were pitted against younger pretenders, and the betting was then on whether legs or head would prevail!

In the Plate Final, Craig Davies was matched against club Chairman, Doug Walker, who was only too well aware of the court speed and drop shots of his younger opponent. In the event, Craig didn’t really get going, and allowed Doug to dictate the tactics, resulting in a win for him, 11/7, 11/8, 11/5.

In the main final, featuring club legend Colin Davies and his younger opponent, Calum Wilson, both players started off at a cracking pace, and an evenly-matched first game finally went Colin’s way, 13/11. Over the next two games, Colin started to vary the pace, and tighten his game, and despite some heroic retrieving by Calum, Colin won through, 13/11, 11/7, 11/5.

Trophies were presented by  committee member Steve Smith, with a vote of thanks to Colin Davies for organising the event.

The regular and popular Saturday afternoon all-abilities Racketball session will be back in the Autumn, to which all members are most welcome.

The  final of the club Open Squash Championship will take place in September, after our new floors and front wall refurbishments have been completed. Hopefully we will also have a Ladies Squash Competition to report on in due course.
