Wimbledon Grand Slam

The club's latest grand slam tournament (Wimbledon) attracted a great entry of twenty seven players. It included a great mix of ‘old’ club members, ‘new’ club members, players in their teens to players in their seventies, men and women and players from other clubs as guests.

A busy night with just under fifty matches played in around two hours. Two groups of seven pairs played in a round robin format with tie breaks to seven, followed by playoffs with pairs from each group playing their opposite place.

 

In Group one Caroline Davies and Kirree Ronan finished top having dropped just one point, with Belinda Pilling and Neil Ronan in second place just one point behind. In Group two Peter De Carte and John Taylor finished on thirty eight points, the same as Alan Macnair and A.N. Other but Peter and John went through to the final having beaten Alan and A.N. Other

 

In the playoffs Belinda and Neil beat Alan and Jenny Foy 7-4 for third place. In the tightest of finals Peter and John were taken right to the limit, before winning 7-6 against Caroline and Kirree.

 

Players were treated to Pimms and strawberries by the club's committee. There was also a raffle held on the evening which combined with entry fees brought in over one hundred pounds, which will go towards the refurbishment of the clubhouse.

 

Earlier in the evening the junior club ran their own tournament with six pairs taking part. After an hours play the top four pairs were only separated by five points.  Sophie Wright and Max Cope finished in third place with Emily Osbourne and Amy Jackson in second place. The winners were Cameron Goldie and Matthew Coates.

 

The club's final Grand Slam tournament the US Open takes place on Thursday 3rd September, This will be followed soon after by the Club Championships from 12th to 19th September.
