Spring 2024 Newsletter

The leaves are appearing on the trees, a woodpecker has been heard in the trees behind the allotments, and a strange yellow orb has been spotted in the sky. Is it the sun or one of Gus’ lobs? They are both so enticing. And hot.
Yes, the time has finally come when we can crawl out of hibernation and onto the Courts of Dreams…
Winter League
Ladies Team:
The Ladies have had a good season in the winter league, with lots of tight matches. They have blooded some new promising players and some of the brilliant Rusty Rackets group may be promoted for the forthcoming season. We will be fielding a ladies’ team in the summer, but not a mixed team. If you are keen to play, please contact captain Liz: 07488397143
Men's Team:
The men built on their success in the summer by coming second in a competitive division in the winter league, which means they are promoted to Division 3 next season. We have a dedicated cohort, many of whom have been training with Grant at Exeter University over the winter, who are excited by a challenging summer ahead. If you are keen to play, please contact summer captain Ian: 07427857628.
Coaching:
Grant will be coaching a few sessions for the league teams this summer. Martin has nearly completed his level 2 Instructor course. In addition to coaching the Chagford kids and Rusty Rackets, he will soon be available to coach adults. He is also a qualified Cardio tennis coach, and is keen to start a group session in the summer. Please contact him if you are interested in any coaching: 07831934426.
Events for 2024
May 2024: A BBQ and tennis competition will take place on the May Bank Holiday, Monday 6 th May, from 10am. Entrance fee will be £5.00 per person. A round robin competition will be organised for the day. We hope as many members as possible can attend.
Open Days: Martin will be organising an open day with a free coaching session for non-members, and hopefully a session with refugees who stay in Chagford with the Chagford CHN holiday group.
The Mathew cup: which will be held this year on 8th September.
Club Playing Times
We are pleased to offer a new club session on Monday evening where all are welcome. We will put a message on the WhatsApp group when this will start (due to evening light), but likely mid-end April.
We would strongly encourage all members to make the most of at least one club session a month wherever possible. This will allow us all to mix and play against a wide variety of players and to ensure we all make the most of our facilities. We are open to other suggestions in terms of days of the week.
Monday evening from 6pm (starting soon): Club Open Session. All members are welcome to attend.
Thursday mornings (starting soon), 9.30-12: Home Ed Kids’ group (in which Martin coaches 19 kids!).
Friday morning, 10.00am-11.30am: Rusty Rackets.
Saturday morning (starting soon), 9.30-12: Kids’ Training (in which Martin coaches 14 kids!)
Saturday afternoon, 1.30pm: Club Open Session. All members are welcome to attend.
