Artificial Clay Courts are here

The resurfacing work on Courts 1&2 is now complete and they look fantastic!

Members can book and play on all four courts and hopefully you will all find an opportunity to try the new surface soon. We have had so many positive comments from players already.

The court is made from a ‘hairy’ mat, which is normally filled with ceramic granules level to the top of the hairs. The team have overfilled it because the infill will settle down as we play on it (and with rainfall). They will come back in about a month and top up or adjust as necessary to get it perfect. In the meantime, we need to use it a lot, to wear it in. Be prepared for a few stray bounces to begin with.

Drag brushes are provided for use after play, leaving it nice for the next players but maybe as a warmup exercise if it looks a bit uneven when you arrive. The brushes seem very light and it doesn’t take long to brush the whole court. Ideally go round in ever decreasing ‘circles’ to return infill to the centre of each court. A few loose ‘hairs’ from where they cut the mat will appear, but I’ll gradually remove these.

There are fancy line brushes with wheels, which you can use after dragging, to make the lines look lovely and white. Hold in front of you and push slightly downwards as you move forwards along.

Finally, there is a shoe brush by the gate; stand on one side while you do the other foot! You’ll notice that there has been some overspill during installation, but very little infill should escape during normal use. If it does, I will employ a broom and keep it all clean!

A massive thanks to all the volunteers that made this project happen raising money, organising grants and finance and liaising with contractors. Thank you everyone for your patience whilst the work was being done. Special thanks to Mitzi for organising this supberb aerial photograph.

Have a great game!
