2018 Summer Season Review

Mixed A (Div 1) - 1st Place (Champions)

The Mixed A were once again dominant in the top division, winning all 12 of their games with an average of 7 points per game (out of 8).  A combination of experienced pairings and good matchcraft has made them a team to be feared, this being their 4th consecutive title.  To add good measure to this accomplishment they also defended the Knockout Cup crown in a close final win against Chippenham A.

Mixed B (Div 1) - 2nd Place (Runners Up)

For the second year running, the Mixed B's proved they were the best of the rest in Division 1, pushing the A team close in both league matches that they played.  The strength in depth of the mixed sqauds was proven by a second 1,2 in the top tier.  The B's capped off a great season by winning the Knockout Plate Competition.

Mixed C (Div 2) - 5th Place

The C Team had mixed fortunes in Division 2, winning 4, drawing 3 and losing 5 of their games.  They kept their tally ticking over in a close lower half of the division which set them up for a final day 'winner takes all' match against Freshford.  The winner would stay in the Division, the loser would be relegated.  They prevailed to win 5-3 in a final set decider and will maintain their place in the league next season.

Mixed D (Div 5) - 5th Place

The Mixed D Team had an interesting Division, with the lesser known teams of Lansdown and Wellow competing in it, so they got to visit some different clubs on their travels.  They acquitted themselves admirably against some strong teams in the Division and with a bit of luck, could have snatched 4th place.

Ladies A (Div 1) - 1st Place (Champions)

An ever strengthening ladies contingent is emerging through the club and paying dividends with a fantastic acheivement by the Ladies A team this year in Division 1.  For the first time in 20 years, they have topped the league, beating all of their nearest rivals along the way and thouroughly deserving their victory.  Many congratulations to all involved in this history making team.

Ladies B (Div 2) - 5th Place

The Ladies B had a rollercoaster season, winning 6, drawing 1 and losing 5 of their matches.  They fought well against many other clubs A teams and were never in danger of relegation, just missing out on 4th place by a single point.

Ladies C (Div 3) - 3rd Place

Like the Ladies B, the C's also had a few ups and downs, but more ups thankfully.  The top two teams were away and clear, but our ladies came out on top of the rest of the chasing pack, a great performance for them for the season.

Ladies D (Div 5) - 4th Place

Similarly, the D team also  had many wins and losses either side of 1 draw.  It was very close between the lower four teams and, despite a considerably lower games difference, the D's picked up important points when they needed to to secure a good 4th place.

Mens A (Div 1) - 5th Place (1 game left to play)

It was a mixed bag of results for the Mens A in the 1st Division.  Still with a game to play, they can finish 4th if they get 3 points in their final fixture.  Higher ambitions were quashed with heavy defeats to the top teams and not picking up enough points in victories over those teams doomed to relegation.

Mens B (Div 2) - 4th Place

The B team juggled their personell well to maintain their competitiveness in the difficult to escape Division 2, and cement their position safely.  They will hope to build on a good fourth place next season and challenge for promotion.

Mens C (Div 3) - 5th Place

Division 3 over the first half of the season was one of the closest divisions, before opening up and separating the teams in the second half.  Unfortunately, our guys found themselves in a dogfight with three other teams at the bottom, attempting to avoid relegation.  It came down to the final game of the season.  All four were playing each other with everyone having to rely on another team, as well as themselves in order to survive.  Bad light stopped play against NSI and the C's had to settle for a 4.5 to 3.5 win.  The half point proved crucial however as the two other teams drew 4-4 and the C team maintained their status by that half point.  Nailbiting stuff.

Mens D (Div 4) - 6th Place (Relegated)

Having been promoted the previous season, the D team knew that they would be in for a hard fight this season in order to try and stay up.  This proved the case as they fell to some heavy defeats, although had some very competitive and close sets in many of the matches, which, had they swung the other way, could have turned the tide.  Unfortunately they couldn't hang on to the coattails of the nearest team above them and finished second to bottom 6th, meaning that they will drop down to Division 5 next year.  #we'llbeback.
