Michael Oliver Cup
The third annual Michael Oliver Cup was held this year, coinciding with the longest day. Fortunately the inclement weather that had plagued the month of June gave way to lovely sunshine in which we could celebrate the life of our former member, and enjoy some tennis and a nice BBQ.
The format was the tried and trusted American Doubles where pairs played 4 games against the opposition and then swapped partners for another 4. Both men and ladies add up the individual games they won for a cumulative total, giving a winning pair that may not necessarily have played with each other.
The BBQ was fired up early on into proceedings, with a couple of food breaks in between play. Even though it was the longest day, play continued after 10pm with eventual winners Karen Perrett and Tony Ambridge being awarded the cup (Tony on head to head countback).
I mentioned at the conclusion that ironically, I had been reminded only the day before the tournament about Michael's legacy and the respect held for him not only at this club but also throughout the league. A gentleman on and off court, we should always remember that the club stands on the shoulders of its long serving and dedicated members, both past and present.
