Collins Cup 2018
The Collins Cup is an annual mixed tournament, usually handicapped, where members of all abilities can compete on a level playing field in a fun, friendly atmosphere, supplemented by food and drink.
In the warm, calm conditions of last night, 20 of our members played for the Cup in a mixed doubles event with a slight twist on the format. Paired up with a partner and numbered 1 & 2, each match consisted of 8 games. 4 were played with the paired partner, then 4 against them, allowing players to play with a range of partners over the course of the night. Points were awarded for each game won, per person, culminating in a winner from each pot of number 1's and 2's.
There was a slightly delayed start due to a quartet of players, who will not be named, thinking that the evening started later than expected. Once play was underway however, the tournament progressed nicely and was played in a fine spirit.
With time running short play was concluded just before 10pm under the floodlights with everyone having played the same number of games. After totting up the numbers we had a clear winner from group 1 and group 2. Tony Ambridge triumphed in pot 1, with Cath Johnson winning pot 2. Honourable mentions to their other partners who helped them through, Sue Meharg and Mark Evans respectively.
The tournament was rated a success overrall with nice comments being made by those who took part about the format, which will not doubt be added to the repertoire of different types of tournament that the club can use for these occasions.
