New Clubhouse

The existing clubhouse was built in 1973 and has provided excellent good quality accommodation for the Club ever since. The building is of prefabricated construction and has been well maintained over the last 40 years, mainly through the goodwill of a handful of volunteer Club members.

However, the clubhouse is reaching the end of its natural life. The wooden construction of the building means it is liable to rot. The flat roof was refurbished in 1991 and is likely to need replacing soon. Water, lighting, electrical and drainage systems are becoming dated. The building is too small to meet present Club requirements and needs replacing.

In March, 2009 a subcommittee of Downswood LTC’s Management Committee was formed to investigate the project.

Subcommittee members –
Steve Kershaw (Club President and Chair of subcommittee)
Janet Dunbar (Hon Secretary of Club)
Warwick Webb (past Club President)
Andy McNulty (member of Club) Co-opted in July 2009
Mike Lewis (member of Club)

In January, 2011 the subcommittee Chairman, Steve Kershaw, resigned for health reasons. Steve had driven the project with passion and enthusiasm, taking it through the preliminary stages. With the approval of the Management Committee the subcommittee elected Mike Lewis as Chairman. Andy McNulty was posted abroad and left the subcommittee.

Work continued and outline plans were submitted to Reigate and Banstead Borough Council in July, 2011. Planning permission was granted on 27th October, 2011.

A design Architect, John Cavilla, was engaged and full plans were drawn up to apply for Building Regulations approval. This was given on 23rd May, 2012. A specification was prepared and sent out to 7 companies for tender. After a strict process of evaluation, G.L. Mills (Leatherhead) were appointed to carry out the work.

The project was approved by the Management Committee on 10th December, 2012 and by Club members at an EGM on 22nd January, 2013.

The Contract with G. L. Mills was signed on 11th March and work commenced shortly afterwards.
