The ladies first team made a great start to the Sussex League winter season winning their first two matches in division 5E.
In their first match, away to Hampden Park's second team in September, both pairs won their first rubbers with ease on the AstroTurf. In the second rubbers, Jane Hugo and Ros Parker again won with ease; however, Gill Luis-Ravelo and Jo Chopping lost a very competitive match in two tight sets, as Jo struggled with a recurring arm injury.
Saltdean's second team were next up in October, as our ladies recorded another 3-1 win, this time on home courts. Gill Luis-Ravelo and Leesha Daniells won their first rubber in straight sets after coming through a tight first set tie-break and a relatively straightforward second set, 6-2. Jane Hugo and Ros Parker played well and fought hard but just lost the championship tie break 11-9. In the second rubbers, both matches went the distance to a championship, tie break well into double figures, which both pairs won.
Their final match of 2024 was in November, away to David Lloyd Eastbourne's second team on indoor carpet. The courts played very fast, with the ball coming low off the court, which suited flat and sliced shots, taking the edge off top spin. In the first rubbers, Gill and Jo lost the first set 6-3, then fought back in a tight second set taking it 7-5 and despite a mammoth effort in the championship tie break, finally lost 16-14. Gemma Bridger and Ros Parker took on the opposition's first pair and despite playing well once they settled on the surface, lost in straight sets. The reverse rubbers saw a similar scoreline, as Gemma and Ros also took David Lloyd's second pair to a hard-fought and extremely close championship tie-break, just losing out. Even though Gill and Jo battled hard in the many long points against the first pair - especially Jo who was still struggling with her recurring arm injury - they suffered the same straight sets defeat.
The first team's first match of the New Year is the rescheduled one against East Grinstead's first team, at home on Sunday 19th January.
