Update to members

This is to update you on a few important topics.

New members

We're very pleased to report that we have quite a few new members, many of them introduced by our coach George Ross.  Welcome to you all and thank you George!

Club sessions

Since March we have been running a by-invitation club session for more advanced players from 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings. This has been well attended and a great success. That said, we know that some members are upset by the change. The committee reviewed club sessions at its meeting last week, taking account of the position of members of all standards of play.  We considered, for example, having an extra session on Wednesday evening, and moving one of the Tuesday sessions to that slot.

As it is early in the season we have decided to give members time to adapt to the new arrangements rather than chop and change too quickly but we will keep things under review.

A reason for the success of the session for more advanced players is the effort put into promoting it being made by David Gray, including running an active WhatsApp group. We are aware that the sessions open to all on Tuesday (5 to 7 p.m.) Thursday (6 to 8 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) could do with a boost and think these are more likely to flourish if there are champions for these sessions as well. So, if you would like to help promote and run these sessions please get in touch with a committee member (details here Forest Row Lawn Tennis Club / Home (lta.org.uk)).

Coaching camps

We received a request from our Club coach, George Ross, to use all three courts for a number of camps over the summer.

We have taken into account different views, ranging from those who don't believe that coaching on all three courts at the same time should ever be allowed, to those who are keen to open up the club and encourage juniors.

The balance the committee has struck is to allow George to use all three courts Monday to Thursday in the mornings only for five weeks over the summer: 8 to 11 July,  22 to 25 July,  5 to 8 August,  12 to 15 August and 19 to 22 August.     If any of these bookings turn out not to be needed they are to be released asap.  We have refused George's request to use all three courts at other times.

Apart from the normal club sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday morning, the afternoons and evenings will be available for members to book as well as mornings on Friday and Saturday.  There are also slots to book court 3 in the mornings before 10 a.m. each day when a camp is running.

We appreciate the summer camps may inconvenience some members but we think juniors' camps are good for a healthy and vibrant Club and we believe there remains ample available court time for members to enjoy playing over the summer.

The Club is run by a committee of volunteer members for the whole membership.  We are keeping the above issues under review. If you have ideas on these or other matters and would like to get involved, please get in touch with a committee member (details here Forest Row Lawn Tennis Club / Home (lta.org.uk)).

Kind regards,

FRLTC committee
