As the proposed disclaimer refers to court etiquette, the tennis committee has also agreed to the draft wording for court etiquette, below, which should be a standalone document available on the Club's safeguarding page. With the exception of rule 5, the tennis committee believes that the rules set out below are short, simple and easily followed. Rule 5 has been a bone of contention for many years, as to what actually constitutes appropriate tennis attire. The tennis committee is not aware of the Club having any published rules on attire and therefore believes that acceptable attire should be in accordance with the type of clothing worn at the French Open, Australian Open, US Open and any other ITF/WTA/ATP sanctioned tournament. Tennis's governing authorities, including the LTA, have strict rules with regards to brands and sponsors signs on clothing and equipment; however, these rules only apply during sanctioned tournaments. It is therefore the tennis committee's recommendation to allow a rather broad interpretation of "appropriate" tennis attire, than adopting a restrictive policy, which may deter members.
The wording on the etiquette is set out below for Board approval.
Frinton on Sea Lawn Tennis Club Court Etiquette
Tennis is for everyone! No matter the level or age of a player, they have the same rights as everyone else to be on the courts. At Frinton on Sea Lawn Tennis Club we want all of our tennis members and guests to have fun and enjoy playing tennis. We want to create an open and inclusive environment for everyone. We therefore request that all members and guests conduct themselves in a manner which is consistent with the highest levels of sportsmanship and exemplary standards of behaviour expected in tennis.
By following the court etiquette below, we believe that you will have a good time at our Club:
- Respect the Court: Always maintain the court by picking up balls, keep the court tidy and avoiding damage to the court surface and nets.
- Be Punctual: Arrive on time for your scheduled court booking and vacate the court promptly when your time is up.
- Waiting Players: Be considerate of those waiting to use the court. If others are waiting, limit your play to the designated time and avoid prolonged practice sessions. Similarly, waiting players should not walk behind the court when a game is in progress and should wait to be invited across the court.
- Quiet Play: Keep noise levels to a minimum to avoid disturbing other players. This includes avoiding loud conversations, phone calls, and unnecessary noise, next to, or on, the courts.
- Proper Attire: Wear appropriate tennis attire, including appropriate and recognised tennis shoes suitable for the court surface.
- Fair Play and Sportsmanship: Exhibit good sportsmanship at all times. Adhere to the rules of tennis and play fairly. Honour all calls and respect your opponent's decisions. If a challenge is made do it respectfully.
- Inappropriate Language: Refrain from using profanities, insulting comments or criticising other players.
- Stray Balls: If a stray ball comes onto your court do not knock it back immediately; return it to the back of the court or only to a player if requested.
Failure to abide by these rules or the code of conduct may result in you being removed from the court and/or the right to use the courts in the future.
