Banbury Summer Weekend League
It was a bright sunny Sunday for the first match of the summer league. The Harbury contingent set off in the team bus for the long trip to Deddington.
The men’s pairing was new committee member Olly Wiltshire and Joe Robson. The two instantly set about the task in hand and grabbed the early lead after a long fought first game. Unfortunately the lead was not held for long and Deddington fought back to take a 1-3 lead. However, the Harbury pairing discussed tactics and sought about making amends. After several long games the first set ended with Harbury edging ahead winning 6-4.
The second set was almost a carbon copy of the first with the visitors going down 1-3 once again but soon got back to winning ways with a five game winning streak to close out the set. An extremely close fought match with plenty of long rallies between the two teams.
Final Score 6-4, 6-3
The ladies pairing of Caroline Morland and Katy Wiltshire had a slightly tougher match with the home side taking the advantage. Once again an extremely competitive and evenly matched pairing with numerous long rallies and plenty of net court action on show. Many of the games went to deuce and one in particular had what felt like 50! Harbury were unlucky to not get more out of the match.
Final score 4-6, 3-6
After a brief respite and a long debate of who was playing with whom the players took to the court to do battle once more.
Caroline and Olly faced Sandra and Trevor on court 1 whilst Joe and Katy took on Caroline and Charles on court 2.
Caroline and Olly had a tricky start with Olly dropping serve in the opening game. After four games it was all square and all to play for. A hold of serve and a quick break put Harbury on the front foot and they sauntered home for the first set 6-3. The second set was another up and down score line with neither team wanting to hold on to the lead, however Deddington with the home turf advantage made the first move and capitalised on a sleepy middle period for Harbury. A valiant comeback looked promising but Deddington held their nerve to finish the set at 4-6.
Final score 6-3, 4-6
Joe and Katy made a smashing start in their match taking an early break of serve and managed to hold old for the first set. The second set was even closer with nothing to separate the two teams. Joe and Katy had lost the early advantage but came storming back from 1-4 down to take the set to tie break. The supporters were on the edge of their seats watching as this would decide whether the tie would end as a draw or a win for Harbury. Deddington once again held their nerve under pressure and just edged out the tie break to bring the overall to a draw.
Final Score 6-4, 6-7
A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all and fantastic hospitality shown by the home team.
