Nostalgia

For those of you who may be local and remember, or for those of you who may just be interested...

Our club was first formed as the London Road Tennis club in 1920, playing on grass courts in the Lister Rd/ London Rd area. At some point in the 20's various players in the town came together and became known as Hitchin Lawn Tennis Club.

From the late sixties the club might easily have been re-named Hitchin Wanderers, as the land owner at Lister Rd site, decided 3 houses were better than 3 courts and the club over the next few years played at the Letchworth Hall Hotel, near Willian, and in 1975 at Hitchin Girls' School, as well as at RAF Henlow!

During 1984 plans were drawn up to move to the club's current home here in the old orchard in Bancroft Gardens and sourcing of the fondly remembered wooden cabin - always smelling like a pine wood sauna!

In Summer 2009 the old wooden clubhouse was subject to an arson attack - luckily late at night so no-one injured. The several months following were an emotional roller coaster for those involved in the management of the club but with the invaluable support of local councillors and businesses, the facility was eventually replaced with the existing concrete clubhouse.
