Chairman's Report 2020

Horsell Tennis Club AGM – 12th February 2020

Welcome to the 2020 Horsell Tennis Club AGM.  This year of course our meeting is held earlier in the year having changed our accounting year end to 31st January. Thank you for joining us.

What a year the last one has been! A few highlights:

  • 704 Club members from our Horsell village community (608 last year)
  • 14 junior coaching courses held
  • 6 adult coaching courses held
  • 96 children and adults attended coaching
  • 1 bowls evening with the Bowling Club
  • 1 tennis friendly with the Bowling Club
  • 1 inaugural End of Season Club Competition & Social

And so many more people have been getting out on court.

While all of that’s been going on we’ve:

  • Incorporated the Club as a company limited by Guarantee
  • Registered the Club under the Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) scheme
  • Negotiated and entered into a new 15 year lease for the courts
  • Obtained use of the strip of land in between our courts and the Bowls Club, included in the lease, to erect a covered shelter
  • Planned and administrated the coaching
  • Planned and administrated our social events
  • Moved all of our coaching booking and payments online
  • Organised the maintenance of the courts
  • Changed the Club’s bankers
  • Carefully managed our funds

Once again, your Management Committee has invested a considerable amount of their time and effort in the management of the Club in the best interest of our members.

Given the rising membership numbers, which we attribute partly to the access to excellent and affordable coaching, the Management Committee took a mid-year decision to impose a restriction on membership, limiting new memberships to those in the Horsell 'GU21 4' post code only.  This seems to have worked well and reinforces the Horsell community aims of the Club.

Our finances remain strong, although we’ve had some significant recent expenses relating to the new lease and legal fees.  If any HTC member wishes to view the accounts they are available for inspection on request.

We continue to subsidise access to coaching for our junior members using funds from our reserves. We propose using some of our reserve funds to create the covered shelter, including modifying the fencing and installing an access gate. Mike Tuck has kindly offered to plan and manage this project, which needs to be agreed with the Council before going ahead. It’s proposed that this shelter will be secured with access only from Court 2.

Our membership subscription rate has been the same for many years. As suggested at last year’s AGM, there is a proposed small increase in membership fees in order to continue with the junior coaching subsidies and construct the shelter.

Our LTA venue registration was renewed. In order to achieve this, Parisa Pell has kindly agreed to continue as our nominated and qualified Welfare Officer for this registration year. Thank you Parisa.

Of course, being an LTA venue gives us access to the Wimbledon Ticket Ballot.  Don’t forget to “opt-in” to the Ballot.  Our Ballot Draw will be held in April.

Chris Hearn has kindly agreed to continue as our Club LTA Licenced Tennis Coach. We expect to be able to offer a similar number and variety of coaching courses as last year, with the potential addition of some weekday adult coaching too.

We were blessed with a beautifully sunny late September afternoon for our first ever End of Season Club Competition & Social which we hosted on the courts and in the Bowls Clubhouse. This was a well-attended and fun afternoon, starting with a Pimm’s welcome and a variety of mixed matches all afternoon through to the evening, interrupted only for an Afternoon Tea with ‘fizz’. The unanimous vote of those there was that we should definitely do it again, perhaps also as a season opener too.

Thank you so much to everybody who’s been out on court and who’s got involved over the last year. It’s been a fantastic turn out. Of course, none of this would be possible without the generosity of your volunteer Committee who tirelessly devote their time and energy to keeping our Club available to us and to organising our coaching and events.  Thank you so much to the entire Committee.

As ever, if you would like to join the Committee and help at your Club, we’d love to hear from you. In particular we’re looking for someone to organise and administrate the Junior coaching and also someone to organise and administrate the adult coaching, so get in touch.

Finally, it remains for me to wish you another great season of tennis this year.
