Junior Aegon Team Tennis leagues

Aegon Junior Tennis 2017

Year 2 of Aegon team tennis proved to be even tougher than the first year for our juniors. Similar to last year, everyone enjoyed the matches, however they were incredibly challenging. All matches were made up of one doubles match and one singles match for each player.

The 16U boys played two matches this year. The team were dependant on two players due injuries and GCSE commitments. Despite this, Thomas Wood and Zach Bishop gave it their all when competing. Their first match v Crowborough; Thomas’s singles match finished in a loss 6-2 6-3, however Zach was able to battle to victory in a rollercoaster match 6-1 1-6 1-0 (tiebreak 3rd set). In the doubles it was a similar story with each pair winning a set each very convincingly with Crowborough winning in the end 6-3 0-6 0-1.

In the boys second match they came up against an extremely strong Seaford team who came out victorious 3 match wins to 0.

In the 12u Boys green team, a fantastic opportunity arose for some of the younger players in our squads. Due to older players not being available Kyle Shaw and Seth Brewer did an incredible job of playing in the age group above. Despite not winning a match it was an enjoyable experience for both boys. Kyle played against Cross in hand ‘A’ team, where he teamed up with Finely Wood, they both came up against very good players, meaning the score was fairly one sided, despite this the boys enjoyed representing the tennis club. Seth played against Cross in hand B team with Henry Lundberg. where they could play on artificial clay for the first time. Henry also played with Ben Read, who paired up to play an extremely strong Amherst team, who had county standard players, who are training 4 or 5 times a week. This meant a convincing 3-0 win for Amherst, however Henry and Ben came off the courts with no complaints as they were aware of how good the other team were!

The first green ball (10&u boys) fixture was certainly one to remember for Oliver Goswamy. Making his first Aegon appearance. At the crucial part of the match, he held his nerve 6-1 6-7 1-0. His partner Charlie Hodges gave his all as always but came up against a skilful player resulting in a 6-0 6-0 victory for Cooden beach in that singles match. The doubles decider went to Cooden beach 6-2 6-2. In the age group Seth Brewer was the correct age for; his doubles partner and good school friend Charlie Faulkner travelled to Horsham to take on their green ball team. Charlie came up against a very strong 1st seed player. Seth was involved in another dramatic 3rd set tie break coming out on the wrong side of this match 1-4 5-4 0-1.

The 9& under (orange mixed) had another successful fixture day at the weald similar to last year, playing on a bigger court and a slightly bouncier ball. The team played 4 fixtures on the day against local tennis clubs. A big well done to Will Lott and William Lundberg who remained unbeaten in all of their matches! Each fixture was made up of 4 singles matches and 2 doubles matches. Hurst drew with Henfield 3-3, beat the weald 4-2, drew 3-3 with Maresfield, drew 3-3 with Horsham. This resulted in a third-place finish in the league table with only 1 point separating Hurst and Henfield who were second, and two points away from top position (Maresfield). Big congratulations to all who played, as well as trying their best, great sportsmanship was carried out by all players on this day. Plus, everyone came off the court with big smiles on faces! Players who competed were, Will Lott, William Lundberg, Wilf Taylor, Ashton Goswamy, Aidan Smith & Charlotte Lundberg.

It was a very steep learning curve for all of the players, however they definitley came out of the matches as better players, it is great to see everyone getting better and better each year. Bring on Aegon tennis 2018.

Aegon Junior Tennis 2016

This is the first year we've ever entered a competitive team for the juniors, the fact we have been able to enter four age groups is great.

So far we have come up against a really good standard of teams, some players say they have been practicing/ receiving coaching five times a week. Comparing this to our once a week juniors, the fact that in most matches it has been fairly competitive is promising for our guys and girls.

8&U mixed

All fixtures to be played on the 12th June, looks like we have up to 8 players to choose from!

10&U mixed

So far this team has played 2 matches, the first was against Pavilion & avenue LTC. Despite this being their 'B' team, they still fielded some very good players. The second match was away to the Weald, despite losing there was a noticeable improvement in every player who played in the first match as they were more familiar with the feeling of playing a match (more serves in, longer rallies, and more games won!) Their next match is on Saturday the 4th June against Henfield.

14U girls

The girls have played in three matches so far this season. They played against Pavilion Avenue LTC in their first match, the closest match of the fixture was by Katie Driver who ran their number 1 seeded player close 2-6, 4-6.   Match 2 saw Virgin active Brighton come to Hurstpierpoint, unfortunately they could only bring along 2 players which meant Katie and Holly Meredith were the only Hurstpierpoint players able to play in this match and despite the score line it was great to see both of them enjoying the experience. The third match was away to Amherst, both Rebekah Sayle and Ivy Whaley teamed up together for the doubles and managed to win a few games off of another good team. The girl’s next match is on the Sunday the 5th June against West Worthing LTC.

16U boys

This team is responsible for our first match win of the season. Despite losing some hard fought singles matches on a boiling hot Sunday, the 1st doubles pairing made up of Thomas Wood and Tom Roberts dug deep to outlast the Holbrook Tennis Club in a three set marathon match. The boy’s second match was a short trip to the Weald in Hassocks, again there were some very good rallies but the opposition were too good. The boy’s next match is on Saturday the 12th June.

Keep up the great tennis all Juniors!
