On Saturday 19 November we presented the impressive Cinque Ports Trophy, recently unearthed in a bank vault, to the Mayor of Hythe for permanent display in the Hythe Museum.
This solid silver trophy dates from 1906 and was made by Wakely and Wheeler Est. 1709, one of the most prestigious silversmiths in the UK until they finally closed their doors in 2007.
It was played for at the old Folkestone Lawn Tennis Club which was situated in the Pleasure Gardens (between Bouverie Road and Shorncliffe Road) every year, apart from the war years, until the club ceased in 1961 when the ground was developed and the trophy was placed in a vault for safekeeping.
