Knebworth Parish News Article - October 2021

There has been a continuing increase in interest in tennis in Knebworth with new members of all ages and abilities joining.  As a result, when the weather has been fine there has been plenty of activity and our two new-all weather courts have resulted in play continuing unless it was actually raining heavily or even sleeting as it did it at our first summer tournament!

Junior group coaching. For juniors, although we have put on extra group coaching sessions, there is still an unmet demand and we are working with our coach to find time for additional sessions to ensure all children who wish to can participate.

Adult coaching. Our adult new members are of a wide range of standards. For those with minimal experience we have re-arranged coaching so we now have a beginners/improvers session at Sunday lunchtime.  We continue   to have our group coaching concentrating on tactics and match-play on a Wednesday  evening  which is well attended. Other coaching is available from our coach Dan and is not just restricted to members.  coaching@knebworthtennisclub.co.uk

Adult club sessions.  Our normal club sessions of Thursday evening club night and Sunday afternoon tournaments  have continued and the Covid restrictions we still need to apply are having minimal effect. In addition with some of our new members being strong players we have organised a Monday evening session for them.

Club Tournament Although due to Covid we had to start the tournament late we have managed to fit it in with all the normal categories, although no social get-together and barbecue  could be arranged after. Hopefully this will be possible next year.

Inter Club matches –. The higher teams did well in the summer Datchworth league matches particularly the 2nd and 4th team who topped their divisions. The Autumn leagues are now underway with a number of our new members involved.

Courts. The first phase of our plans for converting our other block of 2 courts to having an all-weather surface is underway with the tree roots undermining the court being dug up and the courts being re-asphalted and levelled. The surface will then be suitable for play and indeed be an improvement on the previous surface.  It will then be ready for the laying of the all-weather “carpet” surface. The Club needs additional funding for this, but we hope to be able to do this within the next 2 years.
