Ledbury Tennis Club – August 2022 Newsletter
As ever there’s a lot going on at our busy tennis club! Membership numbers are high and we’re delighted that you’re all enjoying playing the tennis you love on our fabulous courts in such a lovely location.
A Big Thank You to our Wonderful Volunteers!
We’d like to open this newsletter by saying a big thank you to all of our volunteers who tirelessly tackle the many tasks that keep our club looking smart and running smoothly. So to all of you who; clean and maintain the clubhouse, tend the grounds, water the plants, cut the grass, organise tournaments and matches, supervise Rusty Rackets and Walking Tennis sessions and arrange our social events - Thank You!
Your enthusiastic endeavours are very much appreciated; you make our friendly, happy club the great success that it is and enable all of us to enjoy great value for money from our membership in such a well-cared for environment.
Club Championship Finals Day - Saturday 3rd September
Our Club Championships will be held on Saturday 3rd September and all members are encouraged to come along, cheer on their favourites and enjoy a smashing social occasion at our wonderful club.
We’re expecting to run the nine matches from 10am with presentations at 3pm and will publish a timetable on the website and in the clubhouse.
We do have a plea for volunteers to help run the event:
Umpires: Your chance to be an Umpire! Ideally we’d like several volunteers so we can spread them over the nine matches, with each match taking up to an hour and a half to play.
Helpers: volunteer to serve teas/coffees cake from 11am until 3pm.
Bakers: volunteers to make a cake! Please!!
Cups: please would last year’s winners return their cups
If you are able to help with the event, please contact:
Claire (ledburytcclubcaptain@gmail.com) or Del (ledburytcsocial@gmail.com).
As we didn’t hold a Queen’s Platinum Jubilee event in June it would be appropriate to celebrate this as part of our club championship day. As you may know our club received 30 saplings from the Woodland Trust which have been planted creating a nature conservation area behind the tennis courts. More info at queensgreencanopy.org
Junior Coaching
Our ever popular junior coaching programme will be returning in September with a slight tweak to the times and age groups which we hope will be an improvement. You can see details of the programme and book your place here: click the link.
Guest Fees
As a member of Ledbury Tennis Club you are very welcome to invite guests to join you when you play.
We have reviewed and clarified the rules for guests as follows:
- Guests are very welcome, we just ask for a guest fee of £3 for each guest each time they play.
- You can pay the guest fee via BACS direct to our club bank account:
Account Name: Ledbury Tennis Club,
Sort code: 30-94-14,
Account number: 01591798,
Reference: Your name - You can also pay via the Booking App, however there is a £3 charge per half hour booking so this may be a more expensive option for you.
If you have any questions please contact John (ledburytcmembership@gmail.com)
Box Leagues
The Club Box league has launched and is a big success with two leagues and 14 players. This is a great way to meet new members and play more singles. The current leagues will run until the end of September so do get in touch if you’re interested in joining the next iteration.
You can follow the progress of the leagues here: click the link
Huge thanks to Nigel Long <nigellongdesign@gmail.com>, for organising and running the leagues! Please contact Nigel with any questions or if you're interested in joining a subsequent league.
American Tournament - Saturday 24th September
We will be holding another American Tournament on Saturday 24th from 2pm to 5pm. All members are welcome to come along and join in the tennis or just enjoy the day. It would be great if you were able to bring along some food or drinks to share on the day.
To sign up for the tournament and indicate what food or drinks you might be able to contribute please see the sheet in the clubhouse or email Del (ledburytcsocial@gmail.com). Please also let Del know if you subsequently have to withdraw from the tournament.
Thank you to Lucy Potter for organising the event!
Walking Tennis
This new version of our sport has got off to a great start, with around ten players each week enjoying the regular Thursday afternoon sessions from 2.30 to 4.00 p.m.
By expanding our reach into the wider community and making more use of our courts at a quieter time, Walking Tennis is also bringing in useful extra income for our club.
Two of our regular tennis players have found that Walking Tennis has helped them with useful rehabilitation exercise, following ankle sprains and knee injuries, after first checking with their physiotherapists to confirm suitability.
