Junior stars shine

First of all, congratulations to our 9 & U mixed team who won the division 3 county tier team tennis for 2018. It’s a fantastic achievement for our juniors and their coaches from England Sports Group. Let’s hope that this same team wins the 14 & U group playing under lights in a home match at NPLSC. There are many obstacles to be overcome but, building on the good work of former members, your current tennis committee is working away in cooperation with the new board of trustees at NPLSC to make this happen.

Keeping members and visitors safe

Second, a huge thank you to Sinead McEneaney who has agreed to become the NPL tennis section welfare & safeguarding officer.  This is an essential part of the requirements that tennis committee has completed to ensure that we meet best practice standards for tennis clubs required for registration with the LTA. In other words, we’re still allowed to be in the Wimbledon ticket allocation. If you would like a chance at tickets for the 2019 tournament make sure you register using your BTM number on the LTA website.

Building an even better club

Third, I’m delighted to inform you that funding has been secured to begin renovations of the NPL Sports Club pavilion. The project is being funded by Newland House School supplemented by a generous grant from Sport England. Work is pencilled in to begin on 1 November and scheduled to be completed within 16 weeks. This is the culmination of many years of work including outstanding efforts from our current NPLSC chairman, Barrie Hatch; current cricket section chairman, Chris Churchman and among others much credit must be given to former tennis chairman, Campbell Brown for the role he played in facilitating the introduction of Newland House School to the club.

Dates for your diary

I’m convinced that there is still plenty of good tennis to be played and fun to be had at the club this season and would like to bring to your attention the following dates for your diary:

Sunday 28th October - Social starts at 13.00 as clocks go forward

Sunday 4 November - Bonfire Tournament ( a one-day event with format details to follow)

Thursday 22 November  - Tennis section AGM 19.30 in the pavilion

Christmas meal - Proposed venue is Kings Head on 9 or 16 December. Let us know your thoughts and we’ll confirm soon.

Seeking a secretary

Finally, I feel very lucky to be supported by such an able committee who have all shown a steely determination to make this a better club.  However, more hands make lighter work for all and we are still in search of a tennis section secretary. Please do get in touch if you’d like to volunteer.
