Julie Buckland is this year’s winner of the Hants and IoW LTA Volunteer of the Year award.

Julie has been on the committee for many years holding a number of roles (usually concurrently).

The nomination detailed her work last year as team captain, junior coordinator and welfare officer.  As Junior coordinator she continued to work with enthusiasm, encouraging members and non-members of all ages to play while communicating clearly and strongly the covid safety measures in place.  As Welfare Officer she advised and led the committee in the Club’s response to Covid.  It was mainly down to the risk assessments and processes put in place by Julie that allowed the club to safely resume some activities and re-open for pay-and-play when it did.

Covid obviously curtailed much Junior activity this year – especially the free family and school outreach programmes that we have run in previous years.  Julie led many of these initiatives, championed others and was one of the main instigators involved in the planning and then delivery of the free family outreach programme in 2019 that won the Hants and IoW LTA Peter Grinyer award.  We obviously plan to resume these programmes when conditions allow.

Sadly, Julie has stepped down from the committee this year (she’s moved to Dorset) but not before she helped recruit a new committee including welfare officer, deputy welfare officer and junior coordinator.  We can’t replace her but she has left the Club well poised to succeed in 2021 and beyond.

Her name now goes into the hat for the LTA regional awards and if she wins that then she goes forward to the national awards with winners usually announced during Wimbledon.
