Unified Tennis

The first ever Unified Tennis event was held at the Albert Lawn Tennis Club. The event was organised by Westcroft Lead Inclusion School Teacher Paul Lord and Nick Williams, Head Coach at The Albert LTC.

Unified Sports is a concept originally started in the USA where children with special needs join with other students to form a team and compete against similar opposition. Wolverhampton has already staged Unified Football and Cricket events which have been highly successful. The events allow those children who wouldn't normally play for their school teams to represent their schools at sports tournaments. For example the football event stipulates that there must be two SEN players in the 5-a-side team on the pitch at all times and that other players must not have played for the school team.

The tennis event was organised slightly differently to allow all players to be included. The morning took on a festival type organisation with children developing their skills through a carousel of tennis based activities. The afternoon was competitive with teachers ability grouping their children so that they  competed against others of similar ability.

The day was enjoyed by all with St Andrews Primary School running out as winners.
