Finals Day 2022

Tracy Matthews completed a clean sweep of Club Championship titles on finals day, 18 September 2022, winning the women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions.

She put in a dominant display to overcome Lynne Kretzschmar 6-0, 6-1. Lynne had a tricky passage to the final, including an epic 3 hour semi-final over two days earlier in the week, and put on a brave display in the final but Tracy proved too strong on the day.

In the stand out contest of the day, Matt Cooper survived 2 match points to overcome Alex Street in the men’s singles final. An encounter of real quality, both players looked to apply pressure to the other’s serve and momentum swung constantly.

After just under 3 hours, Alex attempted to serve out the match at 6-5. However, after surviving Alex’s match points, Matt went on to win 8 points in a row to force a tie break and then pull away, building a gap that would prove too big for Alex to come back from, winning 7-3 in 3 hours 15 minutes.

However, Alex picked up a winner’s medal later, teaming up with Jack Bowden, to defeat Russ Lambard and Moray Fleming in straight sets in the men’s doubles.

In Tracy’s doubles wins, she teamed up with Emma Rossiter to defeat Berni Howard and Allison Williamson, and with James McCall to defeat Chris Street and Berni Howard, both in straight sets.

Archie Body retained his boy’s singles title, beating Oliver Wescott in a close game with lots of long rallies.
