Janette Buckley coasts to victory

Janette Buckley

2020 Ladies’ Singles Champion

Due to Coronavirus restrictions, the ladies’ matches and both men’s groups were played at separate times.  The ladies played in a knockout tournament with first round losers going back into the draw, so that everyone got at least 2 matches.

Alison Hunter, the defending champion, Rose Tipton and 2 other ladies entered the competition, with Janette Buckley the overall winner.  Janette lost 4-1 to Cathy Winterbottom in the first round, but then beat Felicity Raud in the semi-final and Cathy 6-2 in the final.

Janette told us, ‘I’ve always enjoyed playing singles and during the phased reopening of the club after lockdown, I started to play again with members of the doubles social groupI entered the tournament last year but lost out early, so wasn’t expecting to do well this year.  After feeling nervous in the first round match, I settled down and really enjoyed the challenge.  I was delighted to become the 71st recipient of the Cup!‘
