Janette Buckley
2020 Ladies’ Singles Champion
Due to Coronavirus restrictions, the ladies’ matches and both men’s groups were played at separate times. The ladies played in a knockout tournament with first round losers going back into the draw, so that everyone got at least 2 matches.
Alison Hunter, the defending champion, Rose Tipton and 2 other ladies entered the competition, with Janette Buckley the overall winner. Janette lost 4-1 to Cathy Winterbottom in the first round, but then beat Felicity Raud in the semi-final and Cathy 6-2 in the final.
Janette told us, ‘I’ve always enjoyed playing singles and during the phased reopening of the club after lockdown, I started to play again with members of the doubles social group. I entered the tournament last year but lost out early, so wasn’t expecting to do well this year. After feeling nervous in the first round match, I settled down and really enjoyed the challenge. I was delighted to become the 71st recipient of the Cup!‘
