Junior Club Championships

Pershore Tennis Centre were proud hosts to their annual mini club championships last Sunday, and it proved to be an exhausting but enjoyable day.

First up were our mini red players, age eight and under. Red (11 Players) Format: Two round robin groups with the best two from each advancing to the semi-finals. Winner: Lucas Webster R-up: Ronan Guppy Group: Murray Name Played Won Lost Pts Diff Pts Lucas Webster 4 4 0 +19 8 Tom Randall 4 3 1 +9 6 Harry Thompson 4 2 2 +4 4 Dara Guppy 4 1 3 -9 2 Jacob Goldsmith 4 0 4 -23 0 Group: Williams Name Played Won Lost Pts Diff Pts Ronan Guppy 5 5 0 +17 10 Tim Bisson 5 4 1 +17 8 Harry Porter 5 3 2 +8 6 George Billings 5 2 3 +1 4 Maegan Teale 5 1 4 -6 2 Rosie Barnett 5 0 5 -27 0 Number one seed, Lucas Webster, breezed through to the semi-final, topping his group with maximum points from his four matches. Tom Randall finished second after fighting off the challenge from the younger Harry Thompson, who was looking to make a mark on the competition with his new racket.

In the second group it was Ronan Guppy who beat everyone to win five from five, and it was Tim Bisson who also progressed to the semi-finals finishing second in the group with Harry Porter one win behind. Special mention to our two girls in the competition, Rosie Barnett and Maegan Teale, who both performed their best and can come back next year and still compete in the red age group. In the semi-finals it was the Guppy/Randall rubber that proved to be the closest. At 6-3 (with matches to 7) Ronan only needed one more point to go through to the final, but Randall wasn't finished yet. He pulled it back to 6-6 with some gritty tennis, but Guppy held on to claim the win. Meanwhile Webster continued his form by winning through 7-3. The final was largely a 'one horse race' with Lucas building a 6-1 lead before Ronan decided to mount a challenge, but it didn't last and Webster claimed his rewards 7-3 to lift the trophy. Orange (8 Players) Two round robin groups with the best two players from each advancing to the semi-finals. Winner: William Billings R-up: Tom Porter Group: Federer Name Played Won Lost Pts Diff Pts Tom Porter 3 3 0 +16 6 James Barnett 3 1 2 -3 2 Lucas Webster 3 1 2 -6 2 Alfie Broughton 3 1 2 -7 2 Group: Halep Name Played Won Lost Pts Diff Pts William Billings 3 3 0 +23 6 Tim Bisson 3 2 1 +2 4 Tom Randall 3 1 2 -8 2 Ronan Guppy 3 0 3 -17 0 It was good to see some of our best red players able to play up into Orange ball and get a taste for a different ball type and court space. However, it was Tom Porter in group Federer who showed them how to play Orange as he won all three of his group matches, including a 10-4 win over red winner Webster, to promote to the semis. It was James Barnett who followed him to the semis by virtue of a superior points difference after all remaining players won a rubber each.

In the second group (Halep) it was William Billings who dominated the group and went through after three wins. Tim Bisson coped best with playing up from Red by taking second spot. His bigger serve was more effective. In the semis the two top seeds, Porter(1) and Billings(2) progressed to the final with relatively easy wins, which left the final we were all waiting for. Last year, it was Tom Porter who had lifted the red trophy by beating William in the red final, so was it to be revenge for Billings in the Orange this year?? YES - it was! Billings went 3-1 down, but then played some great tennis by serving well and advancing to the net to volley or smash away some of Porter's best shots - eventually winning 10-6 Green (5 Players) One group with the best performing player being the winner Winner: Alfie Mills R-up: Jack Bulbulia Results Group: Nadal Score Alfie Mills v Tom Porter 4-0 Jack Bulbulia v Ben Stanley 4-1 William Billings v Alfie Mills 0-4 Jack Bulbulia v Tom Porter 4-0 Jack Bulbulia v William Billings 4-0 w/o Tom Porter v Ben Stanley 9-10 Due to time constraints, they played a champ tie-break Alfie Mills v Ben Stanley 4-1 Tom Porter v William Billings 4-2 Ben Stanley v William Billings 3-4 Alfie Mills v Jack Bulbulia 4-3

We had five competitors for the mini green competition this year with Tom Porter and William Billings playing up. We decided to have a round robin group to decide the winner and runner up this year. There were plenty of competitive matches - Stanley and Bulbulia was of a high standard, Porter defeated Billings (a reverse of the Orange final), and Billings played some great tennis to defeat Stanley 4-3. But ultimately it all came down to the final match and it was between Alfie Mills and Jack Bulbulia who had so far won all their rubbers. Last year they had contested the Orange final and it was Alfie who had won the trophy that time. Jack was desperate to reverse that this year. Jack started well, building a 3 game lead, but Alfie started to come back: 3-1, 3-2, 3-3! By this time Jack was mentally demoralised and Alfie took the tie-break to win the mini green title. A big thank you to my red scorers this year - ably done by some of our older juniors.

And lastly thank you to all our competitors for making it such a great day in the calendar once again #TeamPershore
