Well those months since my last entry in October have flown by, but probably come too soon for the more discerning readers. At our recent AGM, there were a few leavers & new members on the committee, but for the time being at least, you’ve still got me.
Trigger Warning- for those new readers, my feeble attempts at humour may well fly over your head if you’re a youngster under the age of say…..70!
We entered 5 teams in the 2024 Summer Short Format League ( each pair playing 4 sets )
I am now able to provide our final standings :-
Ladies Division 3 - 2nd - promoted.
Mens 1st Division 1 - bottom & relegated to Division 2. We found it hard going but we were strong enough to hold up the division!
Mens 2nd - Division 4 - 5th, but staying up.
Mixed 1st - Division 1 - Champions. We won all our matches, with a special mention for Kate B, who played in every match & won all her sets - tremendous effort, Kate!
The presentation evening was held on Saturday 8th March, at the High School. The members collecting the trophy were Chris, Kate, Ed & Craig. ( see photo)
Mixed 2nd - Division 4 - top ( won 5, drawn 1 ) - promoted.
The Winter League results are not finalised, but hopefully I’ll have them for the next issue.
One result from the Winter League, is worthy of mention, I reckon. On Sunday 26th January, the Mens team were at home to Burton Joyce. As the team were desperately short of men, Rob the captain, wheeled me out for a cameo? appearance. He must have thought that I was marginally better than a cardboard cutout of Roger Federer. Thanks to the support of my long suffering mate & tennis partner, John Clissold, we managed to win half our games (18-18), contributing to a 71-37 win. Mercifully for the team, I’m now back in my box!
During the last season, we had a number of new players join, who have enjoyed it sufficiently to carry on playing this year.
If after this you would like to rekindle your interest in tennis, please come and join us. The summer season starts on April 1st and the ongoing refurbishment of the Leisure Centre will not impact on our activities.
The club times are as follows:-
Monday & Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm. Saturday is 2-4pm and Sunday 2-3pm. If you are interested, please ring Angela on 07940 700399.
