Mel's Report - September 2024
Sat, 14 Sep 2024 00:00
Let’s get straight into the exciting part, i.e. the league results!
On Saturday 31st August the Ist Mens were away at Sutton-in-Ashfield. The result was a narrow defeat 5 sets to 7, with Ed & Simon winning 3.
On Sunday 1st September, the Ladies were home to Southwell. We won 10-2, with Denise & Jane, Ellie & Roisin each winning 4 sets. This was a very successful 1st match for Roisin and that now makes us 5 wins out of 5.
On Saturday 7th September, the Ladies were away at The Park, playing against their rivals for top spot. They were much too strong and we lost
0-12, but the consolidation was that we were still promoted to Division 2! It was a baptism of fire for Alex in her Ist game, but onwards & upwards.
On the same day, the Mens 2nd were away at Mansfield. We lost 3-9 to a strong outfit, with Matt & Simon winning 2 sets.
Finally, on Friday 13th September ( lucky for us ), the Mixed 2nd were home to Keyworth. We won 10-2, with Rick & Roisin, Arthur & Ellie, each winning all 4 of their sets. Many thanks to Roisin & Alex, for getting involved in the Ladies matches, in their 1st season with us.
On Wednesday 4th September, we held our Finals night and bbq. As previously mentioned, I wasn’t able to be there, but I understand it was a very successful evening, with the refreshments up to their usual standard! The Ladies Doubles were won by Angela ( the Boss ) & Jules ( Mary Berry). The Mens Doubles were won by Ed ( Steady Eddy ) & Dave ( the Prodigal returns?). It was, therefore a Family Affair ( Sly & the family Blount?).
The Mens Singles competition was held on Wednesday 11th September. The semi finals were between Chris & Elliott, with Craig & Ed in the 2nd semi. Chris & Craig progressed to the final, with Chris once again winning, for the 7th consecutive time. Excellent victory Chris zzzzzz. Maybe next year we’ll handicap Chris by tying his legs together. I reckon he’d probably still hop to victory!
I think I’ll suggest an over 75s singles competition for next year. Myself & Jan would then go straight into the final. We would, however, need an entourage. A mechanic for the zimmer frames ( bound to crash into the net posts). An NHS professional to administer oxygen/ handle the defibrillator. Finally, an umpire, as we’d probably forget the scores. What fun!!
If after this, you would like to rekindle your interest in tennis, please come and join us. At the time of this entry, the times/ days for the winter season have not been finalised, but they are likely to be as follows:-
Wednesday mornings: 10.30am - 12.30pm.
Wednesday evenings: 7pm - 9.00pm
Saturday afternoons: 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Sunday afternoons: 2.00pm onwards.
If you are interested, please ring Angela on 07940 700 399.
As the winter season starts on the Ist October, this will be the last entry until next Spring. Don’t all cheer at once! As there has been the occasional positive response I may be back next year. If not a new person will take on the mantle of keyboard WORRIER.
