Before we get into the riveting subject of our league results, firstly our summer social. As per a few years ago, we had an evening of pétanque on Saturday 15th June, kindly organised by Angela. Although the weather was a bit drizzly, our spirits were not dampened, particularly those who were imbibing spirits! We were split into 2 groups, with Paul & Ed winning group A and Kate K & Pete winning group B. The overall winning score was recorded by Kate & Pete, but I can’t remember their score, as I’ve slept since then. The evening didn’t pass without incident, as a young man decided to reverse into Kate & Pete’s car. I don’t know if there’s anything we can read into that? One of the prizes was a box of chocolates and a certain person who shall remain nameless thought it was part of the buffet and snaffled a few. The offender was soon identified, as there was some brown debris in his beard. His initials are MS………! It’s all a load of boules isn’t it!! Thanks to the aforementioned Angela for the brilliant organisation & hubby Steve on the bbq, who has this task on direct debit!
Last but not least, Jules & Ellie for the excellent desserts.
Now to the league fixtures and be warned there are quite a few of them, so I won’t go into as much detail as I usually would.
On Sunday 16th June, the Mixed 2nd were away Newark and won 8 sets to 4.
On Friday 21st June, the Men’s 2nd were away at Woodthorpe and lost 9-3.
On Wednesday 26th June, the Mixed 1st were away at Eastwood and won 10-2.
On Sunday 30th June, the Men’s 2nd were home to Burton Joyce and lost 5-7.
On Monday 1st July, the Men’s 1st were away at Attenborough and lost 10-2.
On Friday 5th July, the Men’s 1st were home to a very strong West Bridgford team and lost 1-11. It cannot pass without mention that Arthur & Rick managed to beat our old coach, Gavin Mallalue, which was satisfying!
On Sunday 7th July, the Ladies were away at Newark and won 10-2. Angela & Ellie won all 4 of their sets without conceding a game - excellent.
On Friday 12th July the Mixed 1st were at home to Nottm Castle and won 12-0, a whitewash!
Finally, on Friday 19th July, the Men’s 2nd were home to Southwell and won 10-2.
On Sunday 7th July, the annual Men’s doubles tournament was held, based on a round robin format. The semi finals will be held on Wednesday evening the 4th September. Ed & Arthur will play John C & David, with Craig & Elliott playing Matt & Jordan. Where is the old cuss in the lineup, I hear you ask. I probably wouldn’t have made it anyway, but finals night falls on my birthday (moving from Trombones to Sunset Strip for those of a certain vintage). An appearance may have resulted with the toil & strife cutting off my retreat & that’s not all! I apologise for these dollops of self indulgence, but there has to be some perks of the job!
Finally, Club play times have been extended to include Wednesday mornings which may appeal to those who find weekends a problem.
The new times are:-
Monday evenings from 7pm-9pm
Wednesday mornings from 10.30am - 12.30pm
Wednesday evenings 7pm- 9pm
Saturday afternoons from 2pm-4pm
Sunday afternoons from 2pm-4pm
If you would like to rekindle your interest in tennis please come along, as a number of new people have, during the last few weeks.
If you are interested, please ring Angela on 07940 700 399.
