Nature Valley Big Tennis Weekend
Sat, 15 Jun 2019 00:00
Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June saw our first Nature Valley Big Tennis Weekend. A highly successful and fun two days, enjoyed by both members and non-members.
Despite fears after a very wet week, Saturday dawned fair and dry. The club looked good decorated with bunting and balloons as the Saturday junior sessions got going for the regular juniors and their invited friends and parents. Everyone was greeted by the NVTW ‘orange T-shirted’ team and the club was buzzing with tea or coffee being offered to waiting parents. The coaching team kept everyone busy and the day flowed from junior coaching to adult coaching, coaching and tactics and finally a cardio session with members and guests having taken part in all the sessions.
The ball machine was out on court 8 and a table tennis tournament ran throughout the day.
A BBQ lunch with a well- deserved Pimms was followed by the afternoon American Tournament with 28 entrants and then a fast hard hitting show match played by Daniel and Justin Grainger, Zac and Toby Clifton. Finally the day finished with a somewhat slower paced ‘bygone days’ match played with wooden racquets and white balls between Steve Cooksley, Jim Harmon, Nick Christodoulou and Geoff Keen accompanied by afternoon tea and cake.
Our Competition winners were:
American Tournament- Helen and Kieren Stanley
Runners up - Stephen Reeves and Lindsay Sellman
Table Tennis - Stephen Reeves and Steve Guyon
Runners up - John Peachy and Nick Gane.
The Sunday after the day before was only slightly hampered by rain but those members who braved the elements enjoyed a few sets of tennis interspersed with a bacon butty and left over cakes.
This was truly a team effort and there are so many people who contributed to making the day an overwhelming success. On behalf of the club we have to thank:
Gill Cooksley, Ann Fletcher and Millie Stedman who planned the day, put together the programme, registered the event and arranged and distributed the flyers to advertise the event. Our coaching team, Peter Cooper, Paul, Zac, Flora and Mark who kept all of the courts busy and who moved from court to court to accommodate whatever ability of payers were waiting for them. Pip Anand for catering our BBQ lunch which was so perfectly cooked by Geoff Keen. Nigel Trotter, Steve Peckitt and Graham Granger who manned the bar and served up a tried and tested (by me) Pimms. Roger Dignum who supervised the ball machine on court 8. Pete Lancaster who organised a very popular all day table tennis tournament. Alison Reeves who organised the American Tournament and then throughout the day and for the morning teas, Mandy Lancaster. June Hopkins, Debbie Cooper and Jenny Morton for helping with the afternoon teas and clearing the kitchen. Thanks to all those members who so generously contributed to the day by providing salads, fruit and cakes. Thanks to Steve Cooksley and John Fletcher who supported Gill and Ann with all those tasks that needed to be done. A thank you to Barry Heffernon who took some photographic evidence that everyone was enjoying themselves and having a great time. And finally, in the hope that no one has been forgotten, thanks to all of you, the members, who wholeheartedly supported the day.
Well done everyone for a fabulous event!
