For the first Ladies ‘A’ Team match of the summer season there was much excitement at Ross Tennis Centre.  It was played on Sunday 16th May against Cutnall Green Tennis Club.

Under a hastily erected awning because the pavilion was out of use, the order of play amongst the twelve women was agreed, with everyone a little rusty on the rules after such a long break.

Co-ordinating team selection was Lynn O’Driscoll who watched as the three Ross pairs, comprising Val Davies and Jane Pepperell, Sarah Drake and Gaynor Raine, Sandy Foulkes and Hayley Jackson, commenced play.  What a tight match they all had as each of the three rubbers went to a tie-break, which unfortunately were all won by Cutnall Green.

Knowing that a draw would be the best outcome the second rubbers began.  Several welcome supporters of the Ross team witnessed some great hitting and long points in each of the second rubbers.  On the top two courts, the Ross pairs took it to a tiebreak again but lost. However, Sandy and Hayley won their second rubber in straight sets – a superb result.  In the tally of games, Cutnall Green won 64 and Ross 63, it could not have been any closer!

Boys' under 14 match

In the boys U14 competition which immediately followed the ladies’ match the boys pulled out a victory for Ross, well done to them!
