The morning of Sunday 1st August did not look promising for the Ross Tennis Centre (RTC) Singles Tournament organised by Head Coach Steve Barnett. However, by noon the rain had stopped and the players bathed in sunshine took to the courts.
Eight men, and three ladies were in with a chance of a medal and the title. As the competition started, the audience grew, and a mini tennis court was set up on the grass for the youngsters who did not want to miss out on playing.
In the middle of the afternoon Ross Tennis Centre welcomed a very special visitor. The President of the LTA, David Rawlinson arrived with Mrs Rawlinson, accompanied by Ed Bradford, Chair of H&WLTA and Jo Marks H&WLTA Administrator and LTA Councillor. The four guests were made very welcome and enjoyed chatting with the spectators. Mr Rawlinson even played tennis with the juniors on the mini-tennis court.
Ed O’Driscoll, Deputy Mayor of Ross and Mrs O’Driscoll also visited, and met Mr Rawlinson to discuss the improvements made to RTC over the last three years by the Directors and members. “I am very impressed”, said Mr Rawlinson.
The men’s and women’s singles tournaments were won by Rob Jordan-Deering and Val Davies respectively, who were presented their prizes by David Rawlinson and Steve Barnett. In 2019 RTC was “Highly Commended” by the LTA and is run by volunteers for the whole community. Adult membership is only £10 a month www.rosstenniscentre.org, everyone welcome, non-members welcome to play too.
