Rothbury Tennis Club Newsletter - April 2023

https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/RothburyTennisClub

Dear Members

It seems like ages since I wrote a newsletter, so I thought that with the start of the new season, now was a good time to put that right.

Our Membership Year starts on 1st April, so you should all have received a reminder to renew your membership. You may have noticed that we are trying out a new form which makes entering your information onto our membership spreadsheet much easier. I hope that you will find it easy to use, but please let us know if you experience any problems.

Membership forms can be found on our website:

https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/RothburyTennisClub/Membership/Join

 Membership Fees

The AGM in January agreed to only uplift the fees in line with inflation. You will remember that we halved the fees over covid, and although they have gone up since then, they are still lower than they were in 2014. We believe that the lower fees are playing a part in maintaining our increased membership numbers, which stood at 127 members in January 2023.

Foreign Refugees

We agreed at the recent AGM to continue to offer free membership for any local refugees who would like to join. As you know we have several Ukrainian Refugees living locally. If you think any of them would like to play tennis, please tell them that we are offering free membership. They can just fill in a membership form for new members from the website, or contact any of the club officers.

Programme of Events 2023/24

I am attaching our programme of events for the coming year to this email. The first event is on Saturday 15th April when we plan to meet at the courts at 10am to help tidy up the courts and surrounding areas. This usually lasts about 2 hours and it should be an enjoyable morning. Please turn up in gardening clothes, dress for the weather and perhaps bring a few garden tools and gloves. We will provide some refreshments.

The full programme of events can also be found on our website:

Wimbledon Tournament

The Wimbledon Tournament will be held from Monday 3rd July until Sunday 16th July. As your club is affiliated to the LTA, all our members are eligible to apply to the LTA for LTA Advantage Play+ membership. This is free and it gives you a chance to enter a ballot for Wimbledon Tickets. Helen and I were successful in the ballot this year. I would encourage everyone to consider applying to join LTA Advantage Play+. It is free and the benefits are shown on the link below:

Wimbledon Open Morning

We will be holding our Wimbledon Open Morning on Saturday 1st July from 10am – 12noon. This is just before the tournament starts on Monday 3rd July. This event is open members and non-members. Do come down and bring a friend for some fun tennis and strawberries and cream!

Coaching

Our coach, Grant Watson, is starting the season with a Junior Tennis Camp during the Easter Holidays on Monday 3rd April from 9am till 1pm. It is open to members and non-members aged 4-16 years, so tell your friends. For information about this camp please contact Grant Watson on 07921078198 or email:  grantmdwatson@gmail.com

Grant also runs coaching sessions on Monday evenings. The junior sessions are well attended but he does not get much interest from seniors. If you know anyone who would be interested in tennis coaching, do ask them to contact Grant.

Information about coaching is available on our website:

Encouraging Tennis in Schools

In order to encourage our local children to try tennis, the club has agreed to match fund tennis coaching sessions with Rothbury First School. This will provide sessions for children to learn some tennis skills culminating in a mini tournament to be held on our courts.

Club Sessions

The club runs club sessions on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30pm till 3.30pm and also Sundays from 10am – 12 noon. Everyone is welcome to attend any of these sessions. Just turn up and you will get a game. We mix players around so you get a chance of playing with a few different people.

Rothbury Tennis Club WhatsApp Group

We have a WhatsApp Group which allows you to see what is happening, who may be turning up to play and what the weather is like in Rothbury, for those living a distance away. If you would like to have your name added to this group, please contact me by email: gordon@westhillshouse.co.uk or by text message on 07713019967. I will need your name and your mobile phone number and I will add you to the group.

American Tournaments

We are running our usual American Tournaments this year. We usually have them on Sunday mornings, but it has been suggested that we try different times and days, so this year we are holding one on Saturday evening 17th June from 7-9pm. The second tournament is on Sunday morning 16th September at 10-12noon. These are fun events where you get the chance to play short games of doubles with lots of different players.

Mixed Doubles

We are hoping to start up a new session on Saturday afternoons of Mixed Doubles from 2-4pm. It will be held on the last Saturday of the month, starting on 29th April. You don’t need to bring a partner, but we will try to get a balance between the sexes. If you are interested in playing Mixed Doubles, please let us know. Chris Cann is setting up a new WhatsApp Group to help run this so please get in touch with her on 07766521625 or chriscann1@hotmail.com with your mobile number. The more people who get involved the better this will work.

Parent and Child Tournament

We are also trying to arrange something which involves our junior members and their parents. It was suggested that a Parent and Child Tournament might be fun. If you are interested, please let me know by email gordon@westhillshouse.co.uk or by text message on 07713019967. If enough people are interested, we will try to find a suitable date for the tournament.

Safeguarding

In line with advice from LTA we have been reviewing our Safeguarding Policies. The revised policies are all on our website: https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/RothburyTennisClub/Governance/Policies

I would like to thank Ruth Hamilton, our Safeguarding Officer, for all the hard work that she has put into revising these policies.

I would encourage you all to read through these.

Should you ever have any safeguarding concerns please get in touch with the Club Welfare Officer, Ruth Hamilton, who can be contacted on: 07714753327or email.        rltcwelfareofficer@gmail.com

If you are unable to contact Ruth, please get in touch with me, Gordon Cameron on Mob.07713019967 or Tel: 01669 621179 or email me on: gordon@westhillshouse.co.uk

You can also find details on the safeguarding page of our website: https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/RothburyTennisClub/Safeguarding

Court Booking

Our courts are very rarely fully booked up but if you are planning to play tennis, it is useful to check the Court Booking sheet on our website to ensure that the courts are not booked and to book your own court. This is especially important in the evenings as once you have put in a light token, you will not want someone turning up who has booked the court.

New Court Gate Opening Device

We are investigating installing a new gate opening device later this year. We will let you know when it happens.

Christmas Dinner

Finally remember our Club Christmas Dinner will be held on Saturday 9th December. The venue is still to be decided but put the date in your diary.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy year. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the courts. If you have any suggestions about anything we could do to improve the club services, do get in touch.
