News - September 2019

Hi everyone, I hope you are well and enjoying your tennis and life in general.

Handicap Finals Day

Thanks to everyone who pointed out the (terrible) error in the last newsletter....it is of course this coming Sunday when this takes place. The tennis starts at 1pm with the men's and ladies singles, followed by the doubles and it concludes with the mixed. Well done to all the finalists - you now stand on the edge of history and you have a great chance to get your name alongside other esteemed champions. There is also a social event - chilli and rice for only £5. If you would like to get involved with the food, please let Camala know - 07910778880.

Just a reminder....

If you are playing with your friends or other people who aren't members you must pay £3 into the visitors box sitiuated in the clubhouse above the floodlight switches. Non-members are permitted to play a maximum of 4 times per year.

New President required!

As mentioned in previous newsletters this will be my last year as President, ending at the AGM in March. I have served on the committee for the best part of 20 years and it has been a huge honour to have served you, our fantastic members. Over all this time I have tried to always put the club first and I have always tried to help everyone get the best out of their experience at Roundhay. Times change, circumstances change and people change and it feels like the right time for me to take a step back. I am now asking everyone involved in the club to think about taking on this role...it's really not as arduous as you may think it is and I will certainly offer you the greatest support I can. I firmly believe that the club is on the "up" so I think it is a good time for me to step down and some new enthusiasm to be injected. Please get in touch if this interests you or would like to know more about what the role involves.

Oh balls!

No doubt you will have noticed that I sign off every newsletter asking you not to mention balls to me. This is because over the course of my time on the committee, tennis balls has been the dominant discussion point around the committee table and when I field queries from members. Everyone has an opinion on what the best ball to use is so I opted to not get involved with any further discussion. We have tried many different balls over the years and every time we have trialled different balls we get a barrage of comments insisting Slazenger Wimbledon are the best. It's just easier to leave it. (For the record I think Head ATP are the best!)

Date for your diary

The annual Christmas drinks will take place on Friday 13th December at 8pm in the Deer Park.

Wimbledon Opt-In

You may have received an email from the LTA telling you that the opt-in process for WImbledon 2020 is now available. If you do or don't want the chance to get tickets to visit the championships next year, please will you opt-in? The more people who opt-in, the more tickets we get allocated so why not do your fellow club members a favour and give them a bigger chance to get tickets?

RLTC Veterans successful first season!

Our veterans team in it's first season narrowly finished second in the Leeds Veterans League. Thanks to Stephen Reiss for captaining the side and hopefully next year we can go one better! Look out next month for a comprehensive round up of how our teams performed this season.

Another reminder....

Monday to Fridays before 6.30pm is junior priority time. Seniors (unless there is courts free) are not entitled to court time before 6.30pm. All midweek social tennis sessions officially start at 6.30. These times have been in place for as long as I can remember and I know that many times over the years the courts have not been used by juniors at these times, particularly Mondays. I would encourage everyone to please accept this - it's not a change it's just a proper utilisation of the courts that us men have been lucky to avoid over the past few years.

If you do have any comments, questions or queries please do not hesitate to get in touch. (Excluding balls) . As always my commitment to the club is 100% and it will be that way until the next AGM.

Thanks, Chris
