News – October 2017
Hi everyone, I hope you are all well. Please excuse the length of this months’ letter but there’s been a lot going on!
Court 4
If you’ve been to the club recently you may have noticed that court 4 is currently taking a bit of a break. For a number of reasons this is the most played on court at the club and as a result is showing more signs of wear and tear than any other court. This is particularly evident on the deuce side at the far end. If there are other courts free then please use those first – only use court 4 if all the other courts are in use. It makes financial sense to resurface as many courts at the same time as possible and we hope to get another couple of years at least from the upper courts. Due to the floodlight replacement we aren’t exactly cash rich at the moment but I think the all the courts (including court 4) are in very good condition.
Handicap Results
Thanks to everyone who entered the tournament and everyone who was involved in the organisation of it. The results on finals day were as follows:
Men’s Singles: Sam Llewellyn bt Chris Harper 6-2, 6-0
Ladies Singles: Lucy Laville bt Rosie Dixon 6-2, 4-6, 6-3
Men’s Doubles: Glen Marsh & Chris Harper bt Jonny Bowers & Kenwyn Paddy 6-3, 8-6
Ladies Doubles: Rosie Dixon & Elaine Abbiss bt Charlotte Cheesbrough & Viva Baillie 6-8, 6-3, 6-2
Mixed Doubles: Rosie Dixon & Isaac Mullings bt Sam Llewellyn & Oxana Smith 6-2, 7-5
Well played all!
Junior Tournament
Junior finals day is this Saturday (14th October) and play will take place between 9am and 2pm. Please come along and support for a while!
Ladies night changes
With your support we are going to TRIAL a change to ladies night from Wednesday 11 October until Christmas. From 6-7pm it will remain an all comers hour. As now, play with whoever is there. From 7pm there is the option of pre-arranged 4s, to play as many sets as you want.
It would be good to see ladies who have an arranged 4 to come a bit early and mix in for an 8 first.
Five courts are free from 6pm with court 6 free at 6.45.
The idea is to provide something for all abilities and to bring together the 4s played on other nights
It will encourage players of all abilities to fix a 4 with players of a similar standard week to week.
And there is still an hour at least where players can come ad hoc for a game. Feedback welcome.
Curry and Quiz Night
This will take place in the clubhouse on 4th November NOT as first advertised on the 3rd November. Teams are made up or 4 or 5 players – once you have formed your team please contact Lauren (lozza_bozza139@hotmail.com OR Camala (cammarsh1@hotmail.co.uk). It’s only £10 per person and you get loads of curry as well as access to the quiz. Having said that, there probably isn’t much point in you entering as my team is bound to win. However you may enjoy the curry so I hope to see you on the night.
Tennis Circus
Thanks again to everyone who came and took part on the day. Despite the weather we had a brilliant day – it was great to see so much enthusiasm from both coaches and players alike during the coaching sessions and we were all entertained by the exhibition match at the end. Former Great Britain Davis Cup players Danny Sapsford and Luke Milligan were our coaches for the day and it was fantastic working with them. I occasionally get feedback from members regarding the way the club has been run but in my time as President I’ve never had so many positive messages from the people who took part. We will definitely look at rebooking the guys to come back but they are already sold out for 2018 so we’ll have to wait for 2019 unfortunately! Danny and Luke both gave up their time for free meaning we took 100% of the money – more than £500 to boost the floodlight fund.
Accounts
As a limited company, by law we are required to publish our accounts and have them audited. We currently employ an accounting firm to do this at great expense. If you are qualified to do this or know anyone else, we are looking at cutting the cost of this. Please get in touch if you think you can help.
