A perfect summer’s day on August 24th set the stage for the inaugural Isle of Wight Padel Tournament, hosted at Ryde Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The event marked a major milestone in the club's history, showcasing its two brand new padel courts, which were officially opened in July. 24 pairs attended the all day tournament which started at 08:30 and the final finished around 20:00. The players epitomised the inclusivity of padel as a sport with the level ranging from beginner through to expert and the 48 players included 7 women, 5 juniors and we also had 11 visitors to the club who entered. All were able to compete on court in the world’s fastest growing sport.
In terms of results the plate final was won by Gordon and Sam Baker (13) a father and son duo edging out Ed Stolliday and Barnaby King (13) in a brilliant match highlighting the strength of the juniors competing.
The main draw saw Frazer Emms and James Smith beat Richard Hutchins and James Cooney 7-6 in a superb semi final and in the other half of the draw Niklas Johansson and Liam Reese beat David Cartwright and Simon Jenkins 6-2.
The final was a closely fought contest with Reese and Johansson edging Emms and Smith 6-4. The only break happened in the 9th game and Johansson, the ice-cold big Swede, served out to win the tournament.
We had superb attendance of spectators and players, a thoroughly enjoyable and energetic day and a closing note to the first summer of padel on the Isle of Wight. Special mention goes to a visiting celebrity Jack Whitehall who acquitted himself superbly.
Special thanks go to Liam Reese for all his hard work in organising this event.
