FINALS 2024
St Ives Tennis Club had two new singles champions after Joe Harper claimed the men’s title and 13-year-old Ruby Hampson won the ladies at the 2024 finals day.
Joe beat Bill Peters 6-1, 7-6, fending off a spirited second set fightback by the former champion, and Ruby, in her first St Ives club tournament overcame Birte Hosken, winner for the last two years, 6-1, 6-1.
Last year’s winning pairs both retained their titles in the men’s and ladies doubles.
Harper and Matt Trevorrow beat Adrian Botterell and James Brown 6-3, 6-4 while Birte Hosken and Annette McAvoy defeated Carolyn Brown and Lou King 6-2, 6-0.
Trevorrow and Ruby Hampson made it two titles apiece as they beat James and Carolyn Brown 6-0, 7-5 to take the mixed doubles title.
The clash of the day came in the men’s over-50 singles where Tony Wong, after a gap of two years, claimed the trophy for a fifth time.
After losing the first set 6-4 and winning the second 7-5 he fought back from 5-3 down in the final set to win four games in a row for victory in a two and a half hour marathon.
