LTA Winter County Cup Success

Last weekend saw our Men's and Women's Winter County Cup teams compete in the 2024 event.

The Men were in Division 2a which this year was held at Cardiff Met Universty and Middlesex, South Wales and Warwickshire were our oppositions with the winners of the group getting promotion to Division 1 next year.

The men's team which included Liam Broady who has a career high ranking of 93 in the world started off strong with a 8-1 win over Middlesex with Liam, Imran Aswat, Rob Cowley, David Quayle, Ben Davies and Sam Chadwick all winning their singles matches. Rob and David then won their doubles match and Charlie Hutchings pairing up with Liam also won their doubes match.  Saturday saw the men take on Warwickshire with the score 4-2 Lancashire after the singles. Liam teamed up with Imran to win their doubles and Rob and David once one again won, a 6-3 win for the roses. 

Sunday saw the Men take on South Wales for a chance of promotion to Division 1. Liam unfortunately retired injured but Imran, David, Rob and Sam got wins to ahve the match at 4-2 with Lancashire needing 1 win to secure promotion which they managed with matches left to spare. The Men finished winners of Group 2a, a great achievemnt from the team. 

Next winter the Men will compete in Division 1 at Bath University.

The Women were in Gruop 2a which this year was held at Boston Tennis Club in Lincolnshire with Herftordshire, Lincolnshire & Surrey as  the opposition.  The Women played a strong Surrey team on Day 1 and lost 3-6 with all bar 1 of pur players being 18 or younger.  Saturday saw a even tougher challenge Hertforshire who beat us 9-0 and went on to win the Division and gain promotion to Division 1 next year. The team knew that they needed to win against Lincolnshire on Sunday to stay in Division 2 next year. The young side got off to a great start with Jade, Hima, Daisy and Mariam winning their singles matches putting the team 4-2 up only needed to win one of the 3 reamining doubles to beat Lincolnshire and stay in Division 2.  Lancashire won with 2 rubbers to spare with Hima and Mia winning their match in 2 sets. 

A third place finish and a guaranteed place in Division 2a for next year, well done team.
