Ramsey Town Cup 2022 Report

The Ramsey Town Cup was held during the week August 6 to 14 in glorious weather on the Mooragh Park courts.

The first event was the mixed doubles, with eight ladies and eight men taking part. It was a draw for partners, with the eight pairs being put into two groups of four. Each pair played one set to four against the other pairs in their group.

In Group A Tracey Timms and Orry Farnworth went through as the winners, winning all three of their matches. Michaela Duchonova and Alistair Breed finished as runners-up, winning two of their matches.

In Group B husband and wife Michele and Richard Simpson were drawn together, which proved to be a strong pairing. They won all three of their matches, with the runners-up being Ellen Barlow and Colin Beaven.

In the semi-finals, Tracey and Orry beat Ellen and Colin 4-1, with Michele and Richard winning 4-0 against Michaela and Alistair.

The final was played as a best of three sets match. The first set was decided on a sudden death point at 6-6 in the set tie-break with Michele and Richard taking it. They went on to win the second set 4-1 and thus the title.

Unfortunately there weren't enough entries to play the ladies doubles. The ladies singles was a straight final between Sarah Long and Michaela Duchonova, who both had recently played for the IOM at county level. The first set was very close with Sarah taking it 6-4. She then went on to take the second set 6-0 and so retained her title from last year.

The mens doubles were played in two groups of three pairs. In Group A, Orry Farnworth and Sean Drewry proved too strong winning their matches without losing a game. The runners-up were Andrew Maxwell and Nick Reeder.

In Group B Jon Gower-Jackson and Kevin Drewry won both of their matches, with the runners-up spot going to Adam Davies and Colin Beaven.

In the semi-finals, Orry and Sean beat Adam and Colin 4-0 4-0. Jon and Kevin beat Andrew and Nick 4-1 4-3 to round off the second semi. The final went to Orry and Sean 6-1 6-0.

In the mens singles first round, Adam Davies beat Barry Gaffney 6-0 6-2. Nick Reeder beat Alistair Breed 6-3 6-4.

The quarter-finals saw Sean Drewry beat Nick Reeder 6-0 6-0, Orry Farnworth beat Adam Davies 6-2 6-0, Jon Gower-Jackson beat Andrew Maxwell 6-3 6-4 and Kevin Drewry beat Chris Mash 1-6 6-4 11-9.

In the semi-finals, Sean beat Kevin 6-0 6-0 and Orry beat Jon 6-3 6-1. The final was a lot more competitive than the match score suggests with Orry pushing Sean in both sets, but Sean took the title 6-1 6-0. In the consolation final, Andrew beat Alistair 5-7 6-1 10-7.

Ramsey Tennis Club would like to thank Andrew Farnworth for refereeing the tournament.
