Re-arrange

There were five matches scheduled for this weekend, Mixed Alpha at home to Swanmore, Mixed Charmers away to Southampton University and Girl’s 16s at Avondale – on Saturday. Sunday there was just the one, Ladies Belles at home to Warsash B. Photo: Ladies Belles showing off the latest fashion in winter tennis kit!

So Saturday was a bit quiet in the end. The Girl’s 16s did not travel to Avondale as the opponents could not raise a team and the Mixed Charmers did not go to Southampton University as similarly that opponent had problems I believe.

The Mixed Alphas started really well with Dan Kwiatkowski & Summer Colling winning 6-4, 6-2. Mark Wellby & Magda Kornijczuk needed a bit of practice so they dropped the first set 4-6 but then went on to win the second 6-1 and took the match tie-break. After a bit of a warm up Dan & Summer decided to try their hand at tie breaks winning 7-6, 7-6 but Mark & Magda won at a canter 6-1, 6-2 to complete a 4-0 win.

On Sunday the Ladies Belles assembled for a photo before commencing their match against Warsash. Connie Allen & Nakshatra Sridhar showed no mercy winning 6-0, 6-0, Sue Wells & Jocelyn Kwan halved 6-2, 3-6 but Sheena Barker & Claire Syrett lost 2-6, 2-6. Boy it was a bit chilly out there! Connie & Nakshatra then won 6-1, 6-2, Sue & Jocelyn won 6-2, 6-2 but Sheena & Claire again lost 1-6, 1-6. With their noses in front there was no stopping them now. Connie & Nakshatra won 6-1, 6-2, Sue & Jocelyn granted a walkover to Warsash but Sheena & Claire won 6-0, 6-1 to record a 5.5:3.5 win for Thornden.

A bit of other news I picked up: the Thornden Schools team including Magda, Nakshatra, Jocelyn and Anna Vinnell won the County Girls Year 10 competition but came up against Millfield (I think it was) at Regional level. It seems to be inevitable that the School lose at this stage, mainly because they are local girls and not on tennis scholarships – so we accept our fate but even so it is good stuff.

Remember that in the coming week we will be having the Pavilion courts cleaned and treated so please do not use the courts until the signs come down. The Theatre Courts will be available but if you do use them please return the nets to the same storage arrangement as you find them. In addition the drain alongside the courts will be emptied and refilled with clean shingle. I will be there on Thursday if you have an hour or so free to help myself and Matt Lax. On Sunday we will finish off filling this drain and tidying up. VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!

Next weekend: Saturday 27th October: Boy’s 14s at home to David Lloyd Southampton. Sunday 28th October Ladies Angels away to Kingsgate, Boy’s 16s at Swanmore and Girl’s 16s at home to Steep.

Title: Biffy Clyro: 2016. Yep, I never heard of them before but apparently their Guitarist, Simon Neil says the “guitar is an extension of his personality” after he won the “Fender Play award” at the Q awards. Now isn’t that interesting. The song title seemed to match the two postponements this week!
