Magic Moments

On Wednesday the Men’s Senior Tennis A team was at home to David Lloyd and the Men’s B’s was away to Warsash B. On Saturday the Apsley A team was away to Riverside but the Boy’s 16s match at home to Totally Tennis was postponed to July. On Sunday the April Boys 12s was away to Compton & Shawford and the Ladies Team Tennis was away to David Lloyd Southampton. That is lots to talk about. Photo: Apsley As at Riverside.

The Men’s Senior A ad an unsuccessful evening on Wednesday. Peter Colling and Paul Stavely (you note that Pete is assigned his full names as he is playing Senior Tennis) started with a loss 3-6, 2-6as Mark Wellby & Matt Pitman lost heavily 1-6, 0-6. The reverse doubles had Pete & Paul win 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 but Mark & Matt lost in the tie break 4-6, 6-3, 0-1.

In Warsash, Stuart Grubb & Kevin Porter won 4-6, 6-1 1-0 as Nigel Lindley & Lindsay Ross lost 2-6, 3-6. In the reverse doubles Stuart & Kevin won 5-2, 6-1 but Nigel & Lindsay lost 3-6, 6-40-1. It looks all square until you do the sums but in games we won 37-33 – which is a good start against a tough club.

Then to Saturday with the Apsley As travelling to sunny Riverside, finishing before the thunderstorm thankfully. Mats Colling & Liezl Edom started out with a solid 6-3, 6-2 win, James Ardley & Magda Kornijczuk won 6-2, 7-5, Alex Billingham & Connie Allen started well but sort of faded losing 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 and Milan Bharadia & Frankie Colling won 6-3, 6-2. The Ladies pair of Magda & Liezl won 6-4, 6-2 but Frankie & Connie lost badly 3-6, 0-6. The Mats & Alex stuttered to a 3-6, 4-6 defeat and Milan & James comfortably won 6-3, 6-2. So it was a 5-3 win at the end for a youthful team, some of which were more youthful than others!

Sunday morning the Boy’s 12s team travelled to Compton & Shawford in a Division 2 match. Sam Ardley dispatched his opponent 6-0, 6-0, Ben Hatfield won 6-1, 6-0 (with a painful wrist), Harry Robinson lost a tight match 1-6, 6-7 and Nicolaas Van Zyl Smit won 6-1, 6-0. In the doubles, Sam & Ben keen for refreshments were quickly back in the hutch 6-1, 6-0 but Harry & Nicolaas decided to keep everyone waiting eventually winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. That makes the score 5-1 by my reckoning.

Meanwhile our Ladies Team Tennis team travelled to David Lloyd Southampton. This match did not go according to plan but they are not the “A-TEAM”. Magda Kornijczuk started off with a positive 6-4, 6-1 win, as Lydia Kelly also took no prisoners 6-1, 6-3. Janet Butler had a tight match losing in the tie break: 2-6, 4-6, 4-10 and Abby Morris lost a tight match 1-6, 6-2, 8-10. So to the doubles: Magda & Lydia cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win but Janet & Abby lost 2-6, 0-6. In the tie break we managed to win and take the tie. Made a good end to the weekend.

Finally I loved the story of the St Bernard dog that was thought to have cancer in its digestive organs. Turned out it had eaten three of the Chihuahua’s teddy bears. Has absolutely nothing to do with tennis but a lovely story. No sign of cancer and the hound is now back to carrying brandy to people stuck in snow drifts (not).

Next Week: Very busy: Wednesday 18th April the Mens Senior A team is away to Winchester B and the Mens Senior B team is at home to Salisbury B. Saturday 28th April the Boys 12s are home to David Lloyd Southampton 13:00 and the Boys 14s are at home to Kingsley 15:00, the Apsley As are at Totton & Eling and the Apsley Bs are at Winchester C. Sunday 29th the Girls 14s are at home to Denmead 09:00, Men’s Elite are home to David Lloyd Bristol at 12:00, the Boys 16s are away to Winchester and the Mens Team Tennis 2 are away  to Alverstoke.
